Maintenance Mechanic


Provide in house mechanical repairs as assigned and general building maintenance.


  • Basic Carpentry (Framing, drywall, tape, tile and painting).

Kennel Associates

We are currently looking for enthusiastic Full and Part-Time Kennel Associates to join our team. As a Kennel Associate you will ensure the general health and wellness of the animals as you assist them in finding quality homes.  Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, assisting the public during the adoption process, feeding the animals, cleaning and disinfecting animal cages.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Care and wellness of animals; canines and felines.
  • Ensure that all animals have fresh water, and cats have clean litter pans.
  • Feed animals. Restock the feed area.
  • Observe animal appearance and activity for general physical condition, obvious signs of illness, disease and discontent.
  • Write animals to be seen when they show signs of illness.
  • Clean and disinfect all animal cages in assigned area. Maintain the cleanliness of utility closets and podiums. Sweep and mop floors as required.
  • Scrub and disinfect walls and floors when needed.
  • Greet and approach adopters, complete adoption forms.
  • Process adoptions as necessary, call references.
  • Assist with special events and TV shows as needed.
  • Write in drop cats, kittens and puppies.


  • Positive and friendly attitude. Good communication and listening skills.

We are seeking a full time experienced Groomer to assist in grooming North Shore Animal League America dogs and cats as well as client's pets that have been adopted from us.

Schedule grooming appointments as needed and answer the phones. Grooming consists of bathing, cutting hair, de-matting and clipping nails. Treat for skin diseases and bathe (using medicated and grooming bath solutions) cut hair, de-mat and clip nails as needed. Administer special dips to animals as prescribed by a Veterinarian.

Prepare the setup of all grooming equipment (blades, clippers and scissors).Disinfect all cages, dryers and tubs. Keep the Grooming Department clean and disinfected. Secure all tools and equipment in appropriate cabinets at the close of the day.


  • Knowledge of grooming practices for wide range of small animals, including hand-scissoring skills.
  • Grooming certification a plus!
  • Previous experience working hands-on with animals in a shelter environment or veterinary facility.
  • Apply knowledge and skills in controlling and/or handling individual animal temperament.
  • Possess ability to gain animal confidence when restraining them for grooming.

Pet Behavior Trainer

We are currently looking for temporary or per diem Pet Behavior Trainers to join our team. In this role, the perfect candidate will be responsible for the following:

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work on the adoption floor throughout the busy part of the weekends and assist with adoptions.
  • Speak to potential adopters about dogs with behavioral issues.
  • Work various assigned dogs on a daily basis.
  • Set-up protocols for animals being worked with behavioral issues.
  • Feed, medicate and walk behavior department animals.
  • Assist with playgroups with various kennel dogs.
  • Evaluate any animal placed on a behavior hold and prepare a written evaluation.
  • Prepare written releases and recommendations for adoption of animals with behavioral issues (including floor copies and behavioral handouts).
  • Assist other departments experiencing difficulties with the handling, treatment or movement of any animal exhibiting scared or aggressive behavior.
  • Conduct safety training, obedience, orientation and in-home training classes. 
    • Conducts Little Learner classes on Tuesday evenings.
    • Conducts Sunday orientation classes for new adopters.

  • At least six months previous experience working hands-on with canines in a shelter environment, veterinary facility or graduate of a dog trainer school.
  • Strong dog handling skills with the ability to read dog body language.

Rescue & Adoption Transport Associate

We are currently seeking a full-time Rescue & Adoption Transport Associate to assist customers and promote North Shore Animal League America’s mission through prompt, professional, and courteous service.

Ideal candidates must exhibit the ability to remain professional, courteous and objective in all situations, with a strong desire to make a positive difference in the lives of animals. The driver will transport The Animal Leagues staff and animals in a safe and timely manner to off-site locations and transport trips. Supervise staff and oversee entire adoption process and event at the location. Maintain mobile adoption units (i.e. clean, stock with supplies etc.). Select and load animals for the offsite event. Care for all animals while in their custody. Gather medical records and medications for selected offsite animals. Screen potential adopters for adoption approval, fill out adoption paperwork, perform computer and reference checks and enter pet insurance. Process approved applications and payments. Must be available, if selected, to go on cross country or interstate trips. Transport events include emergency rescue efforts, Tour for Life (which is a multi-week event) and transport initiatives.


  • Must be at least 25 years of age with 5+ years driving experience
  • Must have a clean driving record for the prior 3 years and must remain insurable

Digital Marketing Intern

We are currently looking for a Digital Marketing Intern. Our Digital Marketing Intern will play an active role the continued development of our online community. Under the supervision of our Digital Marketing team, the intern will help drive donations, adoptions and attendance at events using a variety of digital media. Must be available Monday-Friday at least 10-15 hours per week. This is an unpaid internship.

Foundation Manager

We are seeking a Foundation Manager to manage the effort to maintain and grow our relationships with national foundations and to leverage resources of the foundation community to help North Shore Animal League America (NSALA) reach its organizational goals. Will report to the VP of Corporate and Foundation Giving and work with other development staff to support their research and grant writing needs. Will be responsible to expand the organization’s foundation support by identifying new prospects and cultivating and stewarding relationships with program officers at current and lapsed foundation donors from among international, national, regional and family foundations.

The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years of relevant experience in successful foundation relations recognized for significantly expanding support for key initatives. A demonstrated ability to plan, execute and successfully develop partnerships that lead to transformational support is essential. Confirmed knowledge of, and top-level contact with, major sources of foundation funding.

He/she will conduct research on foundation prospects, prepare written research reports, identify new donor prospects, assist with moves management, and oversee prospect screening. He/she will also be the lead grant writer and liaison with institutional funders, working closely to align grant sources to key strategic initiatives. This position requires a comprehensive understanding of grants and prospect research practices, a high level of professionalism, collegiality, self-motivation, organization, and familiarity with the goals and objectives of NSALA.

The successful candidate will also possess the following qualifications:

Planned & Major Gifts Officer

North Shore Animal League America is seeking a dedicated, energetic, and passionate Planned & Major Gifts Officer to help cultivate relationships with current and prospective donors to acquire planned gifts (primary) and major donors (secondary) to support the work and mission of the organization. The ideal candidate will have a track record and history of cultivating, soliciting and closing planned and major gifts.

This position will work from our Port Washington, New York office and travel regionally as well as nationally. There is up to a 40%-60% travel commitment for this position.


  • Research, schedule and conduct personal donor visits to develop positive and purposeful relationships with planned givers, major donors, existing and new prospects.
  • Work closely with the Development team to identify and cultivate new Major Gift donors.

Veterinary Student Externship Program

Veterinary Student Shelter/Medical Center Externship Program 2017

The North Shore Animal League America is pleased to offer an externship opportunity for students currently enrolled in their third and fourth year at a veterinary college. NSALA, the world’s largest no-kill animal adoption and rescue organization, offers students a diverse experience in animal sheltering as well as medical and surgical management of disease.  

The Alex Lewyt Veterinary Medical Center was first established in 1992 and is dedicated to the treatment of all puppies, kittens, cats and dogs that come to our Rescue & Adoption Center each year.  We strive to provide the highest quality medicine to both our shelter population and owned pets from our community.

Each week, over 150 animals are hospitalized and over 200 outpatients receive examinations and treatment.  Our veterinarians see, on average, over 20,000 pets each year.  Our medical staff provides our shelter pets with a full range of medical services including: routine vaccinations, management of complex medical cases, pediatric and neonatal medicine, isolation and management of infectious disease, spay/neuter procedures, soft-tissue and orthopedic surgery. We have a state of the art medical facility with digital full-body and dental radiography, ultrasound, a dental suite, rigid and flexible endoscopy.

We have a two or four week externship program that focuses on sheltering rescued pets as well as treatment and surgical procedure.  Students have a variety of opportunities within our facility; working in our shelter, making rounds in our medical wards, seeing patients in our Outpatients Clinic, and the chance to both observe and participate in surgical procedures.  

Extern Responsibilities:

Externs are expected to work 40-hour weeks, and as a facility open 7 days a week we require ONE weekend shift each week.  Our facility is very hands-on and we expect the externs to participate in medical examinations and treatments of our visiting and hospitalized pets.  The student will be paired with one of our staff veterinarians while they attend to hospitalized patients.

Staff Veterinarian

We are currently seeking a full time Staff Veterinarian to join our team of professionals providing high quality care for all NSALA pets in the Shelter and Medical Center, and those entitled to care at the NSALA Medical Center while following all League procedures and protocols in both the Shelter and the Medical Center.


  • Participate in Shelter and Medical Center rounds: perform physical examinations, and institute appropriate treatment for a high volume patient caseload with emphasis on pediatrics and infectious diseases.
  • Interpret diagnostic tests including blood work and radiographs.
  • Complete Shelter Medical worksheet while doing Shelter Medical and Daily Status Sheet for client updating during rounds in the Medical Center
  • Schedule premie and adult pre-adoption spay/neuter surgeries as well as other appropriate surgical procedures.
  • Complete all appropriate medical records and supporting documentation.  Correctly fill out all necessary prescription and request forms.
  • Prepare special Discharge Notes for animals being discharged from the Shelter or Medical Center.
  • Discharge Shelter Medical animals when a pre-existing medical condition requires that an owner receive detailed medical information prior to adoption.
  • Participate in spay/neuter clinic and perform other surgical procedures as appropriate for patient care and in line with veterinary skills.
  • Participate in outpatient clinic.
  • Conduct telephone conversations with adopters re: hospitalized patients, test results and general medical information.
  • Guide veterinary technicians in performing treatments.
  • Participate in continuing education conferences and lectures and remain current on veterinary literature.
  • Interact effectively with veterinary specialists and referral institutions as necessary to provide care for patients.
  • Participate in DVM Meetings and discussions of current disease trends, perceptions of efficacy of treatments and protocols. Contribute to discussions on the disposition of difficult and complex cases.
  • Perform necropsy examinations to determine etiology of disease when necessary.

In this role the qualified candidate will be responsible for calculating, preparing and dispensing of all medications for outpatient clients prescriptions; reinforce Veterinarians instructions about appropriate methods of administration and any side effects; distribute any printed materials from Veterinarians as needed.     Experienced Veterinary Assistants

    We are seeking Experienced Veterinary Assistants to play a crucial role in our everyday mission to provide quality care to our patients. We provide ongoing training that enhances your professional growth and a learning environment with state of the art medical equipment. The perfect candidate for this position must be detailed oriented with the ability to work in a fast pace environment and provide exceptional customer service to our clients and medical staff, must be able to lift 40-50lbs, maintain the cleanliness of the exam rooms and assist the Veterinarians and Veterinary Technicians when needed.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Assist with medical examinations. Restrain and handle patients as needed.
    • Administer oral topical, eye and ear medications bandage changes.
    • Know vaccine and testing protocols. Prepare outside lab tests.
    • Fecal and urine sample collection and run/read fecal tests.
    • Prepare surgical packs using autoclave.
    • Identify animals in need of medical attention.
    • Document treatments in treatment record.
    • Clean and maintain holding areas, exam rooms and equipment, clean cages, water bowls, litter pans and do laundry.
    • Feed, exercise groom and weigh patients. Perform special diet feeding.
    • Collar, process and transport animals to other areas of facility when necessary.
    • Stock medical and non-medical supplies.
    • Monitor animals in oxygen cages.


    • Qualified candidates must possess 1+ years’ experience or applicable education experience. Hands on animal experience is required.
    • Must be able to multi-task and perform in a fast paced environment.
    • Ability to handle and control animals.
    • Must possess strong communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
    • Bi-lingual a plus
