Certified - Entry Level Pharmacy Technician

We are currently seeking full-time, 40 hours/5 days a week, Certified Pharmacy Technicians. Work shifts are a combination of days, evenings and 1 weekend day shift.

Essential responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Calculating, preparing and dispensing of all medications for outpatient clients as per Veterinarian prescriptions; reinforce Veterinarians instructions about appropriate methods of administration and any side effects; distribute any printed materials from Veterinarians as needed. Prepare all inpatient medications for ECU, Isolation, Foster Care, Shelter Medical and Surgery and distribute these medications to the Veterinary Technicians of each area.

Requirements:

  • Pharmacy Technician Certification required

Our state-of-the-art Medical Center is fully equipped with x-ray, pulse ox, tonopen, 4 oxygen cages, ultra sound machines, IV fluid pumps and full dental & some in-house orthopedic capabilities.

Veterinary Student Externship Program

Veterinary Student Shelter/Medical Center Externship Program 2015

The North Shore Animal League America is pleased to offer an externship opportunity for students currently enrolled in their third and fourth year at a veterinary college. NSALA, the world’s largest no-kill animal adoption and rescue organization, offers students a diverse experience in animal sheltering as well as medical and surgical management of disease.  

The Alex Lewyt Veterinary Medical Center was first established in 1992 and is dedicated to the treatment of all puppies, kittens, cats and dogs that come to our Rescue & Adoption Center each year.  We strive to provide the highest quality medicine to both our shelter population and owned pets from our community.

Each week, over 150 animals are hospitalized and over 200 outpatients receive examinations and treatment.  Our veterinarians see, on average, over 20,000 pets each year.  Our medical staff provides our shelter pets with a full range of medical services including: routine vaccinations, management of complex medical cases, pediatric and neonatal medicine, isolation and management of infectious disease, spay/neuter procedures, soft-tissue and orthopedic surgery. We have a state of the art medical facility with digital full-body and dental radiography, ultrasound, a dental suite, rigid and flexible endoscopy.

We have a two or four week externship program that focuses on sheltering rescued pets as well as treatment and surgical procedure.  Students have a variety of opportunities within our facility; working in our shelter, making rounds in our medical wards, seeing patients in our Outpatients Clinic, and the chance to both observe and participate in surgical procedures.  

Extern Responsibilities:

Externs are expected to work 40-hour weeks, and as a facility open 7 days a week we require ONE weekend shift each week.  Our facility is very hands-on and we expect the externs to participate in medical examinations and treatments of our visiting and hospitalized pets.  The student will be paired with one of our staff veterinarians while they attend to hospitalized patients.

Program Outreach Social Media Coordinator

We are seeking an experienced Program Outreach Social Media Coordinator to work with our Mutt-i-grees Curriculum educational program. The successful candidate must love animals and children with a passion for creative social media!

The Program Outreach Social Media Coordinator will work closely with the Mutt-i-grees Curriculum* Director of Outreach & Youth Development Programs to assist in the creation of a comprehensive social media strategy to increase visibility, participation, traffic and program awareness. This individual will plan, manage and launch social media campaigns, writing editorial, community-outreach efforts, promotions, etc. The successful candidate will be responsible to manage presence on social networking sites including Facebook, Twitter, and other similar community sites. The Program Outreach Social Media Coordinator will create /update copy and assist in the management of video projects. He/she will monitor effective benchmarks for measuring the impact of social media programs, and analyze, review, and report on effectiveness of campaigns in an effort to maximize results. As a key member of the Mutt-i-grees team, the Social Media Coordinator will support and participate in Mutt-i-grees programs at schools, libraries, and other educational institutions for program expansion and PR opportunities.

Requirements:

The ideal candidate will have excellent computer skills and an in-depth knowledge and understanding of social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Google+, YouTube and Instagram) and their respective demographics and how each platform can be utilized.
Exceptional writing skills, strong organizational skills and effective time management the successful candidate will be energetic, resourceful, self-motivated and stay on task while carrying out routine tasks individually and as part of a team.

Maintenance Mechanic

Description

Provide in house mechanical repairs as assigned and general building maintenance.

Responsibilities:

  • Basic Carpentry (Framing, drywall, tape, tile and painting).
  • Basic plumbing repairs.
  • Basic electrical repairs.
  • Painting.
  • Perform daily inspection of league buildings.
  • Purchase supplies from local venders.
  • Record vehicle mileage of all league vehicles
  • Snow removal.
  • Perform minor repairs on league vehicles.
  • Filter changes on HVAC units.
  • Constantly observes condition of property throughout the facility and immediately reports and/or initiates action to correct unsafe conditions.
  • Maintains awareness of proper safety precautions at all times.
  • Be available for scheduled 'on-call' time for emergencies, especially those arising from weather events, such as snow or heavy storms.

Facilities Project Supervisor

Description

We are seeking a Facilities Project Supervisor to assist the Facilities Project Manager with oversight of all capital projects. Responsibilities include the supervision of selected construction and renovation duties as directed. Supervise and perform in-house mechanical repairs to existing and new locations under the guidance of the Facilities Project Manager.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of five years of supervisory experience with 3-5 years of hands on experience in maintenance, carpentry, basic electrical and plumbing, supplemented with experience in a construction related environment.

The successful candidate will also possess the following qualifications:

  • Ability to read blueprints.
  • Possess intermediate level skills in Carpentry, electric, plumbing and knowledge of HVAC systems.
  • Position requires individuals to be able to use general maintenance equipment including, but not limited to, hand tools, power tools, ladders, landscaping equipment, and required safety equipment.
  • Ability to plan work and establish priorities.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Applications.

Planned & Major Gifts Officer

North Shore Animal League America is seeking a dedicated, energetic, and passionate Planned & Major Gifts Officer to help cultivate relationships with current and prospective donors to acquire planned gifts (primary) and major donors (secondary) to support the work and mission of the organization. The ideal candidate will have a track record and history of cultivating, soliciting and closing planned and major gifts.

This position will work from our Port Washington, New York office and travel regionally as well as nationally. There is up to a 40%-60% travel commitment for this position.

Responsibilities:

  • Research, schedule and conduct personal donor visits to develop positive and purposeful relationships with planned givers, major donors, existing and new prospects.
  • Work closely with the Development team to identify and cultivate new Major Gift donors.
  • Participate in special events with a focus on engaging major and planned gift donors and prospects.
  • Assist in the continued implementation of the nationally based planned giving program.
  • Provide tax and estate planning information necessary to secure or promote planned gifts.       
  • Update CRM database and files to keep accurate records on donor interactions.  
  • Manage expense reports according to organizational protocols.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree, or advanced degree a plus, and a minimum of five years of fundraising experience in planned giving.
  • Proven track record working with planned givers and major donors.
  • Working knowledge of estate planning and planned giving strategies, along with understanding of moves management. 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to articulate organizational priorities and match them with donor values and interests.

Description

We are currently looking for an IT Intern to learn PC troubleshooting techniques, work with staff, work with different software and hardware, and learn the pace of an IT position. The successful candidate will provide North Shore Animal League with on- site support services on desktops, laptops, printers, peripherals, handhelds and phones. Must be available Monday-Friday at least 10-15 hours per week. This is an unpaid internship.

Skills Required

  • Creative self-starter who is comfortable with both taking initiative and working in collaboration.
  • Demonstrated capacity to create and implement relevant web based content targeted to a specific audience.
  • Detail oriented with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft applications, basic photo-editing software, and internet browsers. Experience with Adobe Creative Suite a plus.

Shelter Director

We are seeking an experienced Shelter Director who will be responsible for the overall management of the Shelter and all of its support areas. This diverse position requires extensive knowledge of shelter operations and offsite. Must have extensive knowledge of animal welfare: including care, handling, health, behavior and sheltering issues. Must ensure that the organization’s standards and policies for operations and adoptions are met. The successful candidate must demonstrate strong leadership skills that promote a positive, professional, and team oriented work environment.

Requirements

  • Some national traveling to visit other shelters and rescue groups or to attend national conferences.
  • Comfortable doing media interviews and representing the organization in a public forum.
  • Required to work one weekend day every week and be flexible with the schedule. May have to work both weekend days on occasion.
  • Desire to make a positive difference in the lives of animals.

Qualifications:

Rescue & Adoption Transport Associate

We are currently seeking a full-time Rescue & Adoption Transport Associate to assist customers and promote North Shore Animal League America’s mission through prompt, professional, and courteous service.

Ideal candidates must exhibit the ability to remain professional, courteous and objective in all situations, with a strong desire to make a positive difference in the lives of animals. The driver will transport The Animal Leagues staff and animals in a safe and timely manner to off-site locations and transport trips. Supervise staff and oversee entire adoption process and event at the location. Maintain mobile adoption units (i.e. clean, stock with supplies etc.). Select and load animals for the offsite event. Care for all animals while in their custody. Gather medical records and medications for selected offsite animals. Screen potential adopters for adoption approval, fill out adoption paperwork, perform computer and reference checks and enter pet insurance. Process approved applications and payments. Must be available, if selected, to go on cross country or interstate trips. Transport events include emergency rescue efforts, Tour for Life (which is a multi-week event) and transport initiatives.

Requirements:

  • Must be at least 25 years of age with 5+ years driving experience
  • Must have a clean driving record for the prior 3 years and must remain insurable
  • Position is Full-Time (Thursday-Sunday - 10 Hour Shifts)

Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have proven customer service skills and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Candidates must have the ability to maintain good working relationships with the public, employees and various vendors

Kennel Associates

We are currently looking for enthusiastic Full and Part-Time Kennel Associates to join our team. As a Kennel Associate you will ensure the general health and wellness of the animals as you assist them in finding quality homes.  Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, assisting the public during the adoption process, feeding the animals, cleaning and disinfecting animal cages.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Care and wellness of animals; canines and felines.
  • Ensure that all animals have fresh water, and cats have clean litter pans.
  • Feed animals. Restock the feed area.
  • Observe animal appearance and activity for general physical condition, obvious signs of illness, disease and discontent.
  • Write animals to be seen when they show signs of illness.
  • Clean and disinfect all animal cages in assigned area. Maintain the cleanliness of utility closets and podiums. Sweep and mop floors as required.
  • Scrub and disinfect walls and floors when needed.
  • Greet and approach adopters, complete adoption forms.
  • Process adoptions as necessary, call references.
  • Assist with special events and TV shows as needed.
  • Write in drop cats, kittens and puppies.

Requirements:

  • Positive and friendly attitude. Good communication and listening skills.
  • Previous experience working hands-on with animals a plus.
  • Able to work a combination of days, evenings, and weekend shifts.
