Ways Volunteers Can Help

Here are some of the ways you can volunteer your time at the Animal League:

Adoption Center: Dog walking, socialization, feeding, cleaning, grooming, rescue, basic health care, training and obedience, adoption counseling, mobile adoption assistant, answering telephones, making follow-up phone calls to adopters, etc.

Medical Center: Dog walking, socialization, vet tech aide, administrative assistant (includes record keeping, answering telephones, filing, scheduling appointments, etc.)

Foster Care Parenting: As a no-kill shelter, we make a commitment to care for all animals in need. As a result, we always have a group of special animals that need a level of individual care that is difficult to provide in a shelter environment, or the very small number of animals that have been in the shelter for an extended period of time that would benefit from a period of home care. Perhaps you can help. Most of our foster care pets are elderly, convalescent or special needs animals that require a special level of care before we can place them in a permanent home. All animals placed in foster care continue to receive the full range of services from the Animal League.

Humane Education: Humane education plays a plays a crucial role in helping pet owners become more responsible. It also helps both adults and children respect and care for animals. We offer a traditional humane education program that visits schools, gives tours of the shelter to school and youth groups and creates educational materials. We have also launched the Mutt-i-grees® Curriculum a truly innovative school curriculum that teaches children social and emotional skills to help them become more caring and compassionate towards people and animals. Shelter Pet Outreach Team (SPOT): We have all heard about the healing power of animals and the love and joy they bring to all they touch. We reach out to residents in senior facilities and specialized health-care facilities, bringing them shelter puppies and certified therapy cats to hold and enjoy. You can become a part of these truly heartwarming visits.

Administrative Project Specialist: Everyday, there are so many administrative tasks that help us save more lives. Put your skills to work for the Animal League.

Corporate Support/Team Project Member: Employees from local companies offer their time throughout the year for one-day projects that enhance the quality of life for our animals. If your company would like to help, please call the Volunteer Office at 516-883-7900, extension 329.

Special Events/Fundraisers: Did you know that it costs an average of about $1,000 to prepare a homeless pet for adoption. Special needs animals cost much, much more. Because we receive no government funding, and precious little corporate support, we rely almost exclusively on individual donations and special events to support our lifesaving work. Volunteers aid our essential fundraising activities immensely, particularly helping out at our special events here at the Animal League, like the Pet Adoptathon™ and Family Fun Days. Our events, and even office work, are always fun for everyone involved!

Off-Premises Projects: Members of churches, temples, scout troops, and other organizations frequently hold towel and blanket drives and special fundraisers (bake sales, car washes, etc.) in support of Animal League. Perhaps your organization would like to contribute to saving lives this way.
