It is almost impossible to properly convey the joy that rescuing animals gives to all of us at the Animal League.
For 70 years, we have remained true to our mission — building our hands-on rescue and adoption efforts to save the lives of companion animals — and promote education to reduce animal cruelty and advance animal welfare.
We are proud to be the world's largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization, and to continue our history of innovation, being a pioneer in the no-kill movement; shelter advertising, mobile adoptions and tours; global co-operative adoption events; humane relocation; and most recently, the Mutt-i-grees® Initiative.
In 2008, we launched the American Mutt-i-grees® Club that focuses on the unique and wonderful qualities of shelter pets, and educates the public that shelter pets are a responsible, life-saving choice when the time comes to acquire a pet. Tragically, 4-5 million companion animals are destroyed in the U.S. each year at municipal shelters and other shelters that euthanize animals as a means of population control. At the same time, hundreds of thousands of puppies sold in pet stores are the result of inhumane puppy mills. Adopting shelter pets — Mutt-i-grees — reduces animal cruelty and can significantly impact euthanasia rates.
The Mutt-i-grees Curriculum, piloted in 2010, is a groundbreaking educational effort that teaches the next generation of children crucial social and emotional skills. This curriculum, developed in collaboration with Yale University, helps children become more kind, caring and compassionate — to their friends, families, and of course, animals.
All that we have accomplished to date, including the rescuing, nurturing and adopting of close to 1,000,000 animals, would not be possible without the continued generosity of our supporters. On behalf of every Animal League associate, volunteer and the animals that we rescue, thank you for sharing our vision of a day when every companion animal finds a compassionate, permanent home.
Thank you again for sharing our passion and commitment.
