Featured Adoptable Dog: Fiona
UPDATE: Fiona Finds Her New Home
When Jennifer Lavella and her children Kaitlyn and Kyle walked into North Shore Animal League America’s Adoption Headquarters, the first dog they saw was Fiona—and what happened next is proof positive that love at first sight isn’t just a Hollywood fairy tale!
“I opened the door and Fiona was the first dog I made eye contact with,” Jennifer says. “She got so excited to see me. We asked to bring her into the middle room to play, and then spent some time with her. She immediately rolled over for a belly rub and was just very sweet. She was perfect!”
In the weeks since Fiona joined the Lavella family, she’s made herself right at home, enjoying long walks and “ruling the roost,” says Jennifer. She’s developed a strong and loving bonding with her human siblings and also with the family’s older dog, Monte (pictured with Fiona), who is happy to let Fiona be the queen dog. “We were looking for a long time for a good fit, and Fiona has really completed our family. She is very comfortable and is overall a great pet!”
Jennifer encourages everyone to consider adopting an older pet: “It’s great to get a dog who is house-trained and mature,” she says. “A hyper puppy didn’t fit into our lifestyle, and Fiona is just perfect for us!”
Congratulations to the Lavella family on their adoption of this very special senior girl!

Loving Cocker Spaniel Mix Displaced by Hurricane Sandy Needs a Home
When North Shore Animal League America rescued Fiona, the fluffy cocker spaniel mix pictured here, the dog became an instant favorite among the staff who cared for her.
“She is just so floppy and wiggly and affectionate,” says Animal League America’s Christina Lovari, who absolutely adores Fiona. “She loves to be held and give kisses, and she has yet to meet someone she doesn’t love!”
When we rescued her, Fiona arrived with an infected Cherry eye, a medical condition that is extremely uncomfortable and, if left untreated, can affect a dog’s vision. This week, our veterinarians performed the surgical procedure to repair the problem, and Fiona has no residual damage or eye impairment of any kind.
Fiona, who we estimate to be about nine years old, is housebroken and well-trained. She is a real “people person” and is very comfortable around children, but she prefers to be the queen of the castle, so she’d be best in a home without other animals. She will reward you with a lifetime of cuddles.
