The Animal League was featured on The Today Show with some of its dogs for an adoption segment with Dog Whisperer Cesar Millan. The segment highlighted what to look for when you go to the shelter to find your new best friend. Sex and the City actress Kristin Davis was also appearing on The Today Show that day and couldn’t resist a little face time with the Animal League dogs.

Kristin also appeared in the remake of Disney classic, “The Shaggy Dog,” and is a professed dog lover and dog owner. In the movie, Kristin’s husband learns to be a better person by becoming a dog. Kristin says she believes in the relevance of the movie’s plot and that we can all learn a lot from dogs.

At The Today Show set, it was hard for Kristin to tear herself away from the Animal League’s pooches when it was time for her to be on the show. We are happy to welcome Kristin Davis as one of the Animal League’s loyal supporters.

Animal League friend and supporter, Fox 5 Reporter Brett Larson, was ready to bring a new addition to his two-cat family. He came in search of the perfect dog to fit his lifestyle. As he strolled through the shelter, one dog literally jumped out at him. Dan, as he was called, jumped up and reached out to Brett. Brett immediately felt a connection to this black lab Mutt-i-gree. He continued to walk through the shelter, but his mind always came back to Dan.

The only stickler was how Dan would react to cats. The Animal League staff took him over to the Cat Habitat and Dan passed his cat test with flying colors. Brett was thrilled!

Months later Brett came out to support the Animal League again at the 2009 DogCatemy Celebrity Gala with Dan, now Dexter, in tow. Brett said everything is going great with his menagerie and all are becoming fast friends.

The Animal League is thrilled to welcome Brett, Dexter and his two cats into the Animal League family!

Clairborne for Men Designer John Bartlett is a long-time friend and supporter of the Animal League. Recently, John hosted an adoption event at his New York City menswear store to honor his best friend, Tiny Tim, a handsome, three-legged Shepherd-Rottweiler mix. This event was one of many that John hosted which benefited the Animal League.

Tiny Tim is represented in the shadowed icon that appears as Bartlett’s logo on shirts, scarves, accessories and shopping bags in the Greenwich Village store. Tiny Tim, the store mascot, was an Animal League rescue, brought to the Port Washington Shelter in December, 2002, after being hit by a car. Due to his extensive injuries, veterinarians amputated a severely injured leg. After his recovery, the dog was put up for adoption.

Four months later, when Bartlett decided to celebrate his 40th birthday by adopting a shelter animal, he was looking for a small animal that could travel easily with him. But one look at Tim changed his plans and, as Bartlett says, “It has been a wonderful life for a wonderful dog,” since that fateful meeting. Since then, John has taken Millie, another Animal League dog into his life. Millie, a Chihuahua-Jack Russell terrier mix, was rescued from a Georgia kill shelter and brought to the Animal League.

The Animal League is grateful to John for graciously hosting these adoption events for us and for giving a home filled with love to these wonderful dogs.

Recently, comedian, actress, singer and author, Sandra Bernhard paid a visit to North Shore Animal League America. She, along with her daughter, Cicely, fell instantly in love with an adorable, little Pug-mix puppy.

Ms. Bernhard mentioned that originally, she was considering buying a Boston Terrier from a breeder. However, Cicely suggested that they save a dog and adopt from a shelter. They both knew immediately that rescuing an animal from a shelter was the best choice. As a long time friend of Animal League spokesperson, Beth Stern, Ms. Bernhard knew that she wanted to adopt from North Shore Animal League America.

The Animal League is proud and excited to welcome Ms. Bernhard, her daughter and their new puppy, George, into our extended family!

The Algonquin Hotel’s Resident Feline Matilda Celebrates Her Birthday in High Style, Benefiting the Animal League!

It was the cats’ pajamas — and tiaras, capes, tea dresses and more as
Matilda, the resident feline of New York legendary Algonquin Hotel was feted on her 14th birthday. A blow-out party at the hotel, benefiting North Shore Animal League America, was highlighted by a cat fashion show of the latest looks from Meow-Wear. Matilda’s friends from the Westchester Cat Club paid homage to the birthday girl by hitting the catwalk with North Shore Animal League America spokesperson Beth Stern delivering the commentary on the show. Adoptable kitties from the Animal League’s Mobile Adoption Unit, parked outside the hotel for the afternoon, were introduced to partygoers. At the party’s end, Matilda made her grand entrance, having been perfectly groomed for the occasion by Animal Planet’s Groomer of the Year, Artist Knox of “Beverly Hills Groomer.”

Beth Ostrosky Stern and BODHI Creative & Design Director Joseph Janus hosted a summer luncheon and trunk show for BODHI’s limited edition Animal Friendly collection of bags and dog accessories on Saturday, June 13, 2009 at Savanna’s restaurant in Southampton, New York. Guests brought their pets, and puppies from North Shore Animal League America were present and available for adoption.

Beth is a longtime supporter and dear friend of the Animal League and BODHI donated 100% of the profits from this limited edition collection to the organization.

Beth has been a fan of BODHI bags and friend to BODHI Creative & Design Director Joseph Janus since the line’s launch in 2008. The pair share a love of high fashion and their adored dogs (Beth’s Bianca and Joseph’s Marco became playmates at first sight), hence a natural desire to partner on a collection utilizing entirely animal-friendly materials.

Also on hand offering luncheon guests tips on summer grooming and special styles and maintenance for their pets was Jorge Bendersky of Animal Planet’s hit show Groomer Has It.

Thanks to all who made this event a huge, life-saving success!

Geraldo Rivera is an attorney, esteemed journalist, reporter, writer and former talk show host. He is probably most recognized for his inclination toward dramatic, high-profile stories, some of which were so heated, that he has actually gotten caught in the crossfire. Mr. Rivera hosts the newsmagazine program Geraldo at Large, and appears regularly on Fox News Channel.

His latest headline however is “Geraldo Rivera Adopts a North Shore Animal League America Puppy.” On Tuesday, April 14, 2009, accompanied by his wife Erica and 3-year-old daughter Solita Liliana, Mr. Rivera visited North Shore Animal League America looking to add a canine member to his family. They immediately fell in love with a gorgeous Golden Retriever puppy that was rescued from a Kansas backyard breeder and took approximately two minutes to make the decision to welcome him into their family. Though not a “hound dog,” the retriever pup was affectionately named Elvis.

The Animal League is excited to welcome the Rivera family as the newest members of our extended family.

Monica Seles is a former World No. 1 professional tennis player and a member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame. The legendary Seles became the youngest-ever champion at the 1990 French Open at the age of 16.

Recently retired, Monica has changed her focus from serving tennis balls to tossing them to puppies to play fetch! As a good friend to cherished Animal League spokesperson, Beth Stern, Monica also shares a passion for animals and has joined in our mission to help shelter pets.

In 2008, Monica attended the Animal League’s DogCatemy Celebrity Gala in an effort to raise awareness to the plight of shelter pets everywhere, and just recently, during her visit she was bottle-feeding newborns and walking adult dogs at the Animal League.

We are happy to welcome Monica Seles as the newest member of our Animal League family.
