Meet some of the Ike rescues

Startin’ Anew!

October 14th, 2008

Hi everybody,

Ike here reportin’ from North Shore Animal League America in New York! I’m havin’ just the best time ever over here. Everyday I get to play and walk and run and eat and get special hugs and kisses.

I was a little worried when they told me I was goin’ to the big city. But I have to tell ya – everyone has just been peachy-keen. Did I mention belly rubs? I get lots of those! And I suspect I’ll be getting tons more – know why? I’VE BEEN ADOPTED.

Yep. Only a few days here and already I’m headin’ out the door. I’m gonna miss all these kind Animal League folks. They sure do care about animals. And I’m gonna miss all the animals, too. Most of these fellas have been here a lot more than just a few days. It’s a shame.

Take Nicky, for example. Ncky is just over 1 year old and he’s a real hoot! He has been here quite a while – almost six months! Maybe it’s because he’s a big ol’ boy with lots of energy – I don’t know. But I tell ya right now, he’s got a heart of gold and is a real looker, too.

Then there’s Mel and Amelia. These two senior cats have been at the Animal League for about a year now. They are really great cats – they’re only here because their owner died. Sometimes, people pass by the older animals cause pups and kitts are so cute and frisky. But older pets need love too!

Yeah, I sure am gonna miss this place. But the good news is that I’m a bonified “New Yawker” now and I could visit any time I want. Thank you, Animal League, for givin’ me a new life and for takin’ care of so many homeless fellas. And thank you to all the kind folk who support the Animal League and help them do what they do so well!

Headin’ to New York!

September 19th, 2008

Howdy Friends,

Little Ike here with another Hurricane Rescue Update.

Today they told me that we’re hittin’ the road again – but this time, we’re making our way back home! All the folks at the Nashville shelter sure were nice. We couldn’t ask for a better group of people. They helped walked me and all of my new doggie friends and gave the cats on board some room to stretch their legs and play before loading up for the ride to New York. My oh my – New York! I’m in the big time now.

Once on board the big truck, I fell fast asleep. I wanted to be bright eyed and bushy tailed for my arrival at the Animal League, cause these folks are puttin’ me up for adoption! I can’t wait, can’t wait.

So we traveled and traveled until we finally got there. They helped me off the huge moving thing and gave me hugs and kisses. I felt like a T.V. star. People already knew my name and who I am. I think I could get used to this! If this is what having a family is like, I’m all for it. Then I got a bath and a buncha people came in to say hello. If things get any better, I may have to hire someone to help me enjoy it.

So now, I’m all neutered and ready to find a home, and am fixin’ ta do just that! I’d like to say thanks to the nice folks that rescued me; they worked real hard to get me to New York so I can find a family and have a new home.

This sure was an adventure, and I know the best is yet to come. There’s lots to do, too. I’m just as busy as a moth in a mitten, so I better run now. I’ll talk to ya soon, ye hear?

Love and Tail-Wags,

Ike

On the Road Again

September 18th, 2008

Ooooh boy! What a long journey. It’s all been goin pretty good too, no hitches – except for that needle shot they gave me. I didn’t like that much at all, but they said it would keep me from gettin sick, so I guess that’s good. I got a bath, too, and that felt real nice. I was stinky!

I can’t thank the Animal League and the Humane Society SPCA of Bexar County enough for all they’ve done for me as well as all the animals that had to be evacuated to their shelter from Hurricane Ike. You know, they didn’t name me Ike because I’m bad or destructive; they did it because I am the good that came out of it. I guess they’re what you call “looking on the bright side.”

Everyone pitched in to get us animals comfortably loaded for the first leg of the journey to the half way point. We rode for a real long time, but made stops for food, stretching and walks. I got to get out and play a bit too. We were headin’ to do a layover in Nashville with their shelter partner Metro Animal Services. We arrived at 2:30 am! Those folks were also just great to us. They had people there to unload all of us off the big moving thing so we could go potty after the long haul. Then they gave us a really nice place at this shelter to get a snack and take a nap without moving. The people that rescued me said that we have to do this all over again after we rest for a few hours. I don’t like the sound of that too much, but I can’t wait to get to the Animal League in New York where I will find a new family. That makes me happier than a clam at high tide!

Well I’m gonna try and get some shut-eye. We’re all pooped over here. I’ll let you in on the final update after we all arrive safe and sound to our final destination, North Shore Animal League America! I am so happy, my tail just keeps going. Hope I can sleep.

Love and Licks,

Ike

Like a duck on a June bug!

September 16th, 2008

Little IkeHi it’s me, Little Ike, if you haven’t met me yet, see my September 9th blog! So here is an update from me…

Tuesday was a bunch of planning and paperwork. Diane, Mike and Claire were buzzin around like honeybees making sure to get as many animals onto the big rig as possible. It was a happy day, too, because before we even hit the road, some of the animals got adopted, and we were able to fill those spots with other fellas who needed homes too. So on board we have 29 dogs, seven cats and seven kittens - makin’ a total of 43 animals that were saved from hurricane-evacuated shelters and the shelter in San Antonio. These Animal League people are on homeless animals like a duck on a June bug!

Well, that’s all for now… I’ll be talkin’ to ya with another Hurricane Rescue Mission update real soon.

Ike Rescue Unit: The Good Samaritan

September 15th, 2008

Monday morning, it is a beautiful day here in Texas. As we were traveling through the state we noticed how nice the scenery was with huge ranches all full of horses and cows. We stopped along the way at a gas station and were greeted by a Good Samaritan that asked us if we knew of any animal shelters around the area. As we walked closer to the car we found out why. She had this cute black puppy with white markings on his paws looking up at us from the floor of the passenger side. The woman went on to say she found it on the side of the road. Not being from around the area we said that we did not know of any shelters but explained that we were on our way to an Antonio to conduct a rescue and would take the poor little guy with us. I immediately thought that “Ike” would be a cute name for our new little friend. The woman was very grateful that the pup was going to be safe and find a good home with us.

We set up a cage for him and gave him water and food. After a little while of driving he settled right down and took a nap. We all agreed that he must have been exhausted running around the side of the highway. Thank goodness this wonderful woman came along picked the puppy up. Everything happens for a reason so they say. I guess that is why we just happened to come along and stopped at that particular gas station.

We arrived at San Antonio’s shelter in Bexar County and got the grand tour for Mike and me since it was our first time there. Claire was fully familiar with the set up as she has partcipated in our annual Tour for Life events with them for the past six years. The shelter was very welcoming and has a terrific set up for people to go outside with the dogs to meet with them. We selected a whole bunch that we are going to rescue and bring back to the shelter. We are going to try and get as many on board to return back to the Animal League. We have selected some felines as well as dogs.

Tomorrow we are going back to the shelter in the morning to go over paperwork and records so that everything is in order for the long journey back home. We are hoping to fill our mobile rescue unit with as many rescued animals from the evacuated areas that we can. We learned that one of the shelters in Galveston that evacuated to the Humane Society of Bexar County, will take quite a while before it is up and running once again. So we are happy that we are able to rescue animals that were transported from Galveston. There are still more animals that will need to be rescued from affected areas, like Galveston, so we are planning to arrange another vehicle to come down here load up some more dogs to be placed for adoption with us.

We will update you tomorrow on and tell you more about “Ike” – our hurricane puppy.

Ike Rescue Unit: Riding Through Ike

September 14th, 2008

Riding through Ike today was a little challenging. We had some wind gusts in Tennessee and rain for a while driving through the outer bands. We continued on all the way just over the Texas border. We touched base with the shelter in San Antonio who informed us that they did indeed fair the storm well. However, it was still very overcrowded at the shelter and their staff was assisting at the Convention Center where people had evacuated with their pets.

The Galveston and Gulf Coast shelters are still not sure how their shelters did during the storm because they cannot get back in yet. Corpus Christi’s shelter thankfully made it through well. We were told the Houston SPCA is busy answering rescue calls in the area for pets that were in need of assistance in the city to be rescued. We will not know more information until Monday as many shelters aren’t in operation on Sunday.

Monday we will arrive in San Antonio by late morning. Then we will be able to go through the shelter and select as many animals as possible to bring them to the Animal League to be adopted. We will hopefully learn that the other shelters that fled with their animals from the storm will get the go ahead to return.

Will fill everyone in more tomorrow after we visit the shelter and let you know what we will be preparing to transfer back to our shelter.

Ike Rescue Unit: Destination…San Antonio, Texas

September 13th, 2008

We are closing in on our destination…San Antonio, Texas. These roads are all too familiar to Claire and me as this is our third emergency rescue in the South in the last three weeks. Mike Novellino one of our top drivers is also en route with us.

While our rescue team has really been called to action a lot over the past month, and we are definitely feeling a bit worn down, the one thing we never get tired of though is saving the lives of innocent animals.

We spoke to our shelter partners in San Antonio and Houston today, and everyone there is safe, and the animals are ready to be transported back to the Animal League. We’re so grateful that before Ike arrived, our shelter partners were able to remove so many animals from shelters near the Texas coastal areas – shelters that may now be flooded and without electricity. We’ll know a lot more tomorrow and will report in again then.

In the meantime, there are still so many animals at our Port Washington shelter that need to find homes so we can make space for animals we bring back with us. If you’re looking to adopt a pet, now is the time to come and adopt at the Animal League. Save a life and help us continue what we never get tired of doing, RESCUING, NURTURING & ADOPTING animals to loving homes!

Again, we’ll have a lot more to report tomorrow.

Thanks for your support,
Diane, Claire and Mike

Headquarters: On the Road Again

September 12th, 2008

Well, no sooner did we return with dogs rescued from Hurricane Gustav, and then we’re on the road again.

Our mobile rescue unit is traveling to Texas to answer a call from our shelter partner, the Humane Society SPCA of Bexar County. Four shelters in the area where Ike is expected to make landfall; Houston SPCA, Gulf Coast Humane Society, Corpus Christi Animal Control and Galveston Island Humane Society, brought their animals to San Antonio to get them out of harm’s way.

The storm is incredibly devastating and we anticipate that shelters near the coast may suffer serious damage, giving these animals nowhere else to go. We will stay in the area to help as needed, then take many of these displaced animals back to the Animal League in NY and find them permanent homes.

We have a second rescue vehicle that’s prepared to go, should added rescue efforts be needed.

The Animal League has been so incredibly busy over the past three weeks with puppy mill and Hurricane Gustav rescues. While most of the 120+ puppy mill dogs have been adopted, many animals rescued from Gustav are still in our shelter. Now, because of Ike, we’ll have even more animals to care for in addition to our on-going rescue efforts.

I encourage everyone in the Tri-state area to come into our shelter and adopt your new best friend. It will enrich your life in so many ways and will help us continue to save more animals. If you are unable to adopt a pet yourself, perhaps you know of a family member or friend who can open their heart and home to a wonderful pet.

Please join me in wishing our mobile rescue team another safe journey as they manage another Hurricane rescue mission. Until my next post…

-Joanne

Little Ike

September 9th, 2008

Little IkeHi y’all. My name is Little Ike. I’m a puppy. I reckon I’m only about 10 weeks old, but I’ve already had more excitement than you could imagine.

You see, I got caught up in a big storm! Dust and branches were flyin’ everywhere and the roads looked more like the Rio Grande. I was wanderin’ the flooded streets when a nice little lady came by and gave me a ride. She told me not to worry – that she’d make sure I’d get to safety right quick.

We came across a huge camper truck that had cats and doggies painted all over it. It had “North Shore Animal League America” written across the side. Well, if you’re thinking that I stumbled upon some mighty good luck, you wouldn’t be mistaken.

The Animal League said I could hitch a ride with them until they found me a real home. So to earn my feed, I’m writing this here blog to give Diane, Claire and Mike a break. They sure are good people.
