Christopher Appoldt’s Bio

Chris, a Greenlawn, Long Island native, nearly lost his New York accent with his post-college relocations. Once an English teacher in North Carolina ’s Durham and Chapel Hill, he left the South for the cooler climates of Milwaukee and Chicago to work as a managing editor in the publishing industry.

His enjoyment of photography began early, when he received a Polaroid instant camera for his 8th birthday. When he began his publishing career in 1999, his editor required that he be able to shoot editorial and product shots with a portable studio, and trained him in the use of SLR cameras and studio lighting techniques. The urge to pursue photography as a hobby grew from this work, and with his father’s 1962 Nikon F in-hand, self-teaching became wonderfully rewarding for him. His “hobby” found him fulfilling frequent freelance assignments for magazines and stock agencies, and this experience allowed him to begin learning portraiture as well.

Now shooting a variety of both film and digital images using the latest in Nikon’s camera line, Chris contributes his photography regularly to magazine and book publishers, caters to local businesses, and enjoys a regular portrait clientele; his writing on photography and other successful photographers’ work is also regularly featured in Studio Photography magazine. In his free time, he enjoys photographing Long Island landscapes and wildlife, particularly avian subjects. Check out his website for a wider look.
