Hurricane Charlie
Hurricane Charlie visited his veterinarian last week for a regular check-up. Unexpectedly and sadly, Hurricane Charlie’s blood and urine tests returned results that show his kidney disease has most likely progressed. While this is sad news, Hurricane Charlie’s spirit doesn’t seem to be affected. He still thoroughly enjoys his walks, asking his family to take him for two each day by presenting his paw while holding his leash in his mouth. And the best news of all is that Hurricane Charlie will be celebrating his fifth birthday on May 10th. We are all sending our birthday wishes to him and hope for another year of happiness for this precious pooch.

Maybe, the Vet can have Charlie’s system flushed. Like they’ve done with my cat a few times. It doesn’t have to be done all the time, just once in awhile. The Vet well be able to advice you. My Tortishell, had a swollen kidney and, I couldn’t do anything for her. She, died on her own at 15 1/2 yrs. My black cat (who will be 13 in Sept), I have had his Kidneys flushed a few times and, he is doing well. Hope this helps you.

As what M.Ryan suggested maybe you should see if the vet can have his kidney flushed.
Hurrican Charlie is the one that inspired me to join the “sponsor me” program of the NSALA. Infact, he is the one that I have chosen to sponsor. And I’m just so happy when he was adopted. And I applaud his family for taking good care of him. May God bless Hurrican Charlie and his humane family with good health.
My heart goes to Hurrican Charlie and his family and all the animals at the league.

I hear Charlie is really older than 5. I was interested in his tory since the beginning. I heard they might have thought he was closer to 7 when he was at North Shore

Dear Sara,
In response to your question regarding Hurricane Charlie’s age, I wanted to provide you with the information we do have about his history. Hurricane Charlie was rescued from Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Prior to be transporting to North Shore Animal League America for care Charlie needed to be evaluated to confirm that he was okay to travel. At that time he was estimated to be approximately 3 years old. Upon arrival at the Animal League on 9/21/05 Charlie was reevaluated by our medical staff and determined to be as old as 6 years old. Because Hurricane Charlie is a rescue dog we can only approximate his age since we do not have an exact medical history prior to him being rescued from the hurricane and transported here. Therefore we can only estimate that Charlie was between the ages of 3-6 when he was rescued. Charlie was adopted on 5/10/06. Charlie’s family now celebrates his birthday each year on May 10th, the day he was adopted, since they have no way of knowing his actual birthday. Charlie’s family just celebrated his 6th birthday on Mother’s day, 5/10/09, with family and friends. Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns and thank you for your participation in The Scarlett Room Blog.
