Benji
Our furry, four-legged friends bring so much joy to our lives. Their wagging tails and bright eyes make us smile and their open hearts make us humble. They teach us patience, loyalty and unconditional love, and when they leave us, they take a part of us with them.
It is with great sadness and loss that we inform you of the passing of our beloved Terrier mix, Benji. Benji came to the Animal League through long distance rescue efforts. After being a faithful pet for six years, he was given up because his chronic illnesses became too much of a burden for his owner. When the Animal League saw Benji’s sad but hopeful eyes, we knew we could make him happy again.
Animal League Veterinarians diagnosed Benji with heartworm, an upper respiratory infection, diabetes, and cancer. But Benji found a new lease on life through our Sponsor Program and was placed in a loving foster home where he spent the rest of his days.
It comforts us, and we hope it comforts you to know that Benji was a very happy dog. His days were spent being spoiled by his foster family who always showered him with love. He was the focus of everyone’s attention and adoration, and we think he knew it and reveled in it.
The Animal League is very happy to have been able to help Benji have the happiest life possible. His absence may leave a frown on our longing faces, but his wonderful memory will leave a smile in our hearts forever.
Sincerely,
The Sponsor Team

I was also one of Benji’s sponsors and I want to thank the league and his foster family for taking such good care of my little baby. Although I had never met Benji, when I received the news today that Benji had passed, I cried. I’m sure Benji knew that he was deeply loved.

I too was one of Benji’s sponsors and was very saddened to hear of his passing. When I heard, I gathered up my own two dogs and hugged and squeezed them tight so they would know how much they are loved. It is always difficult to lose a pet, but I am comforted knowing Benji had a good life. RIP Benji…I will always remember that cute little face that sucked me into being a sponsor.

To all Benji’s Sponsors,
Thank you very much for all you gave Benji. He had a very happy life. When I would get their meals ready I would say to Benji and the other dogs, “the diner is open.” “Benji’s Diner is open.” Benji would go on the floor and wiggle. Benji had a certain part of the kitchen where he ate. He was a diabetic dog, he had to eat certain food. He ate this food for a long time and he was so good with that.
Benji lost his sight a couple of years ago. When he went outside he had his path in the yard. Everytime he went out he would walk that path. When he went blind I was worried that he might walk into a tree. For awhile I walked with him on his path. He was so cute, he never left that path. Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall he never left that path.
I bought Benji a children’s bed set. Benji loved when he went to bed. He put his head on the pillow and I would cover him. Sometimes he would be under the cover and I would see him wiggle.
Benji made my life so happy. I want to thank you for all your support with Benji. Without people like you animals like Benji would not have this great life! There are three sets of people that are very important that made Benji’s life so happy: North Shore Animal League America, sponsors like you and their sponsor parents. Benji was a big part of my life, his picture in in the hallway and in the kitchen. I will love Benji forever.
Benji’s Foster Mom,

Dearest Ellen,
Thank you for making Benji’s life so happy. You are a very special lady with a very special talent. The love you gave to Benji kept him happy and strong longer than we could ever have hoped for.
Thank you for loving him.
