Welcome to the Scarlett Room

Welcome to the Scarlett Room, named after the courageous mother cat who in 1996 fearlessly risked her life as she rescued her entire litter of kittens from a burning garage, and in doing so, carved herself a heroic place in history and in all of our hearts.

Scarlett is not only the Animal League's beloved symbol of courage and heart; she also symbolizes all the cats in our Sponsor Program who face various hurdles and challenges. Sadly, many of the dogs and cats that come to us have been abused or neglected and others are injured or have chronic illnesses. To highlight these amazing pets who persevere in the face of adversity, we have created The Scarlett Room.

The Scarlett Room is a fun and informative place where you can stay abreast on all the animals in the Sponsor Program - both cats and dogs - learn about their lives, their medical conditions, and perhaps share in their experiences.

We invite you to take a peek into the lives of the Sponsor Pets of North Shore Animal League America.

Below are highlights from some of our sponsor pets...

Nina

October 1st, 2008

Unfortunately, after Nina’s recent check-up, her foster mom noticed that Nina’s eye seemed irritated and red. She quickly brought Nina back to the Animal League. Nina was prescribed medication for what was thought to be an infection, however, after her eye showed no improvement, she was brought back for another check-up. It was determined that Nina had an ulcer on her eye. Ultimately, it was decided that it was best to remove Nina’s eye to help alleviate the pressure and discomfort she was experiencing. Fortunately, she hasn’t let this recent discomfort affect her appetite or friendly attitude. The good news is that Nina had her eye removed and the surgery went well. The next day Nina’s family said that right away she was doing well. We hope for a happy and healthy recovery for our precious Nina!

Buttermilk

October 1st, 2008

Buttermilk’s family is happy to report that he’s doing great! His medication, coupled with the great care he receives from his owners, has helped Buttermilk heal tremendously. However, just when his allergic irritation was almost completely resolved, Buttermilk accidentally scratched his eye. But he has since been recovering nicely. His family was extremely pleased to see that his character has not been affected at all. He is still as sweet and loveable as can be! Buttermilk’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of his sponsors. Without all of your help his amazing progress would not be possible.

King Fritz

October 1st, 2008

King Fritz is back to being his good old self. He’s been running around the house, despite his arthritis, bossing around all the other pets in his home. Since recovering from his recent upper respiratory infection, Fritz has no problem barking orders and tends to get territorial around the home. He takes advantage of some of the more submissive animals, however there are some instances when little Fritz gets put in his place. He usually just retreats to his foster mom’s bedroom to rest in his very own bed.

Little Bean

September 30th, 2008

Dear Friend and Sponsor,  It is with great sympathy that we relay this latest news about our tiny Sponsor kitty, Bean. When a loved one passes, it is often very difficult to make sense of it all. We are left to grieve in their absence, and sometimes we feel compelled to ponder if we could have prevented their untimely passing in any way or what we could have done better. Bean joined the Animal League’s Sponsor Program in 2008. Sweet little Bean was a tiny domestic shorthair cat who weighed only 1 3/4 lbs. She was 8 months old when she came to North Shore Animal League America with her littermate, Jelly. Jelly was a full-sized kitten and did not have any medical conditions, so she was able to be placed for adoption right away. Bean, on the other hand, needed special care. Bean’s growth had been stunted, though we were unsure as to exactly why. In addition to being teeny, Bean had elevated liver valves. She required regular monitoring and regular examinations to further research her condition. Bean was medicated and on a special diet to get her weight up, and to aid in liver function. Sadly, in her last weeks, Bean’s condition worsened. Bean was not acting like herself and started showing signs of neurological disorder. She was more wobbly than usual and began having problems navigating her food bowl. While her appetite was ravenous, Bean was not able to eat enough to maintain her weight. Her health declined rapidly. Bean passed away before her first birthday. Our heart goes out to her wonderful foster mother and to all of her caring sponsors. Though Bean’s days were few, they were full – full of love and full of life. Sincerely,

The Sponsor Team

Carmen, Venus & Pablo

September 1st, 2008

Pablo, including his tiny sisters Venus and Carmen, is doing just marvelously. All three of the pups are continually improving in their wheel carts as they coast around both in the front and back yard! Pablo has been walking the most and his ability to walk in the cart has significantly improved. This daily activity usually tuckers Pablo and his sisters out, which means they need to catch up on their sleep. Pablo’s adoptive family often catches all three of these adorable pups napping together under a blanket. When he’s not asleep Pablo can be caught putting up a fuss during bath time, which is his least favorite part of the day.

Jules

September 1st, 2008

Lately, Jules has been showing signs that he is not interested in grooming himself.  He has been looking bedraggled and getting some matted hair patches in his long coat.  That means his foster family has to take care of the grooming.  They are back to brushing him a few times each week and seeking him out from under the bed for his nightly “rubdowns.”  Jules, of course, protests and tries to dig his claws into the carpet.  When it’s over, Jules continues to complain about it using a peculiar high pitched chirp or kitty “bark” that he emits wandering around the apartment while they sleep.

Cleo

September 1st, 2008

Cleo is usually exceptionally good about not jumping up on the dining room table, but for some reason she kept hopping up during a dinner visit with some company.  After several frustrating minutes of jumping up and shooing her away, it dawned on her family that as the Lady of the House, Cleo might just want to join them as they ate with their company.  With that in mind, they gathered up several pillows and piled them high enough on a chair so that she could see the table.  Sure enough, she hopped right up on them and did lie down while watching them quite contently.  What a hostess!

King Fritz

September 1st, 2008

Fritz seemed to recover well from his last upper respiratory infection. Unfortunately, he began to sneeze again and his family made sure to take care of this right away. Fritz was put on antibiotics once again and was also prescribed vitamin C. Luckily, Fritz bounced back quickly and has continued to take vitamin C, which seems to work wonders for this little pup. But the thing that seemed to put a real pep in Fritz’s step was a cool new haircut - nice and short. He loved showing it off outside in the yard and during his walks.

Celine

August 9th, 2008

Dear Valued Friend,Today we have some heartbreaking news to share with you. Our adored charcoal kitty cat, Celine has left us and passed away. Celine had only been in the Animal League’s Sponsor Program for a short time. Sweet and petite, Celine was a very young cat. At 8 months old, Celine had found herself back where she started - in North Shore Animal League America’s care.

When Celine was just a kitten, she and her littermate were adopted. But less than a year later, Celine started exhibiting strange behaviors. She was falling down and would shake involuntarily, so her owners gave her up. Celine had a neurological disorder which affected her balance and stability. Though she did not suffer from seizures, her condition still needed regular monitoring and maintenance and she needed strict supervision. Beautiful Celine was a very loving and playful cat. Regardless of her medical challenges, she still showed immense spirit and personality. She was a tough little cat who finally found peace and comfort in her last year of life. Her foster family as well as all her many sponsors gave her the love and support she needed and deserved. She was treated with respect and dignity and she walked with valor.

Your generous sponsorship of Celine enabled her to live a good quality of life. She was comfortable, happy and cared for. No one could ever say she was not adored. She was surrounded by those who loved her and all her needs were happily met.

Though we’ve only known Celine a short time, her memory will stay with us forever.

Sincerely,

The Sponsor Team

Tiki

August 1st, 2008

Tiki is a beautiful, male, adult Collie mix who joined the Animal League’s life-saving Sponsor Program in 2008. Tiki’s medical conditions include epilepsy which causes seizures and Addison’s disease, which is the common name for hypoadrenocorticism, where the adrenal gland doesn’t produce enough steroids to manage daily metabolic activity. This can cause Tiki to collapse if he is overstressed due to decreased steroid production.

Tiki has to be medicated for both the epilepsy and Addison’s disease for his entire life. Prior to coming to the Animal League, Tiki had an allergic reaction to a common medication used to treat Addison’s disease, which caused skin irritation and permanent hair loss in two areas on his body.

Tiki is a sweet and loving dog who enjoys playing and cuddling. In our care at only about 3 years old, Tiki is just like any other playful pet. His ailments certainly don’t hold him back, and as long as he stays on his medications, he should have a full and happy quality of life. North Shore Animal League America is honored to have Tiki as part of our Sponsor Program.
