World's Largest NO-KILL
Animal Rescue
and Adoption Organization

Bottom Line: Adoption

Posted by on May 15, 2014

I truly believe in that old saying, “There’s strength in numbers.” When enough caring people join forces for a fantastic cause, great things happen.

That’s how I think about North Shore Animal League America’s annual Pet Adoptathon. It’s an amazing international collaboration that unites shelters around the world for the sole purpose of finding loving, responsible families for homeless animals.

As many of you know, Howard and I are thrilled to be part of North Shore Animal League America’s 70th anniversary celebration. Looking back to the League’s beginnings, I stand in awe of those compassionate leaders who, seven decades ago, had an idea for a no-kill shelter and turned it into the largest rescue and adoption organization in the world.

And now, there’s yet another anniversary to celebrate: 20 amazing years of Pet Adoptathon. Pet Adoptathon 2014 will kick-off at the Port Washington adoption headquarters at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May, 31, and will continue for 36 hours straight. On both Saturday and Sunday, we will have Marvel© Superheroes on-site and Radio Disney. It really will be a fun day out for the family with plenty of activities and a chance to bring home a new furry friend.

But this is not only a two-day event limited to one location. Pet Adoptathon 2014 will last the entire month of June and generate thousands of adoptions around the world. Literally! At the moment, there are more than 2,500 animal shelters and rescue groups in the United States and abroad signed on as participants. The list includes eight countries besides the U.S: Australia, Bolivia, Canada, China, India, Peru, the Philippines, and Saint Kitts/Nevis.

Last year at our Long Island site alone, we adopted 600 pets in 36 hours, all to great homes. This year, more than 700 dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens will be available for adoption, and on Saturday morning, the first 200 adoptions will be free to adopters who meet the League’s adoption requirements.

So if you’re looking for a brand new friend — and if you want to help change the world one pet at a time — stop by one of our many Adoptathon locations. Remember, a precious life is waiting for you to come and save it.
