Emergency Rescue EffortsPosted by on September 7, 2012
One of the many reasons I’m so proud to be the spokesperson for North Shore Animal League America is that their dedication to saving innocent animals knows no boundaries! Nothing stops the brave rescuers from Animal League America from carrying out their mission to ensure the safety and well-being of all animals—not fires, not tornados, not even hurricanes!
In the last few months alone, Animal League America’s Emergency Rescue Teams have traveled thousands of miles—to provide food, shelter and other services for animals in danger from the Colorado wildfires in July; to the St. Francis Animal Sanctuary in Mississippi when their buildings were struck by a tornado; and to provide food, water and other essential supplies to animals affected by Hurricane Isaac.
Animal League America teams saved hundreds of lives by taking homeless animals already in shelters in the path of Hurricane Isaac up to our Port Washington Adoption Headquarters. This allowed the shelters to have room for incoming animals displaced by the hurricane. Many hurricane evacuation centers don’t allow animals. Can you imagine having to choose between finding safety for your family and being forced to leave your pet behind? Just the thought of it breaks my heart. But, because Animal League America helped relocate homeless pets and bring them here for adoption, pet owners had a safe place to bring their animals to ride out the storm.
And that’s not the end of Animal League America’s rescue efforts. Also in the last month, Mobile Rescue Units saved the lives of hundreds of dogs living in puppy mills in Missouri and Oklahoma. When these animals are no longer able to breed, the mill owners often destroy them. Talk about heartbreaking! But, after being rescued by Animal League America, these poor animals get all the medical and behavioral treatment they need here in Port Washington—plus tons of love!
Then, once the dogs are ready for adoption, Animal League America finds wonderful homes for them, where they’ll be given all the love they were denied for so many years. I’ve seen the grateful faces of these wonderful animals when their new families take them home—and the joy on the faces of the adopters! It’s a thing of beauty!
I am beyond grateful to all of you who support the mission of this wonderful organization: to rescue, nurture and adopt as many innocent animals as possible. When I think of your devotion, my heart is full. Our sweet Bianca passed away this summer and I want to use this space to thank you for the outpouring of love Howard and I have received over the past month. The donations made in Bianca's name keep coming in and it makes me proud to know that her memory is saving lives. I miss her so much! Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
