June 2011 ThoughtsPosted by on June 13, 2011
Summer is here and it is a perfect time to bring home a new pet. I am looking forward to seeing many of our wonderful animals find loving families. While many pets are being adopted, kitten season is still upon us and we are seeing a higher population of cats and kittens being brought into shelters. Now, many are faced with an over abundance of homeless cats. It’s the perfect opportunity to celebrate those fabulous felines we love so much and to spread the word on the importance of adopting a shelter pet.
Sadly, about 8 million homeless animals enter shelters each year, and nearly 5 million of them are cats. These poor animals don’t have a chance simply because there is just not enough room at many municipal shelters. Now that cat overpopulation is at its peak of the year, it’s really the best time to bring a cat into your family.
If you don’t have a cat, you should really consider adopting one. Cats make wonderful pets; I adopted both Walter and Apple from the Animal League, and I can’t imagine life without them. Cats are friendly, affectionate, playful, independent and perfect pets for busy lifestyles.
In fact, cats are so special, that they’ve recently been inducted into the Mutt-i-grees® Movement. Two years ago, we introduced the Mutt-i-gree as a mixed-breed shelter dog. But Mutt-i-grees are no longer just dogs…now all shelter pets can have that elevated status.
Please see my Public Service Announcement for the Animal League promoting shelter cats and the Mutt-i-grees Movement. I feel extremely passionate about both of these issues.
Every time I play with Bianca or cuddle up with my cats, I think about the animals that don’t have loving homes. Every pet deserves to be loved and cherished. The fact that so many animals are currently homeless, and many are at risk of being destroyed is tragic.
Thankfully, the Animal League is a no-kill organization. I know that the pets there will be placed into carefully-screened homes…like my friend Pugsley. Pugsley is a weet senior Boxer that really needs a loving home. After years as a family dog, Pugsley was given up because her owners moved, so if you’re looking for a great older dog, please consider Pugsley.
I hope you have a wonderful summer, and make it even better by adding a shelter pet to your life.
