Open Your Heart to a Mutt-i-gree!

Posted by on February 12, 2013

I’ve heard some people say that Valentine’s Day was created as just another excuse for florists and greeting card companies to sell more of their products. To those cynics, I say, C’mon, have a heart!

Romantic that I am, I love to celebrate Valentine’s Day. When you think about it, what in the world could be wrong with a holiday that encourages people to express their appreciation to those who fill their lives with love?

Howard and I usually celebrate Valentine’s Day at home, with our four special Valentines: Apple, Walter, Leon Bear and Charlie Boy, the four feline Mutt-i-grees® we adopted from Animal League America. In fact, this will be our first Valentine’s Day with Charlie Boy, whom we adopted last October. He’s added more love to our lives than I could have ever imagined.

This is the perfect time of year to add more love to your life by adopting a Mutt-i-gree — the term coined by North Shore Animal League America to describe any animal from a shelter or rescue group, whether mixed or purebred, canine or feline, young or old. Whatever their shape or size, all Mutt-i-grees share one common characteristic:  They want to find a loving adopter who will take them home and give them the happy lives they so richly deserve.

I’m very proud to say that Animal League America—the world’s largest no-kill rescue and adoption organization—has been the leading force in advocating for Mutt-i-grees, who are truly the most grateful, wonderful animals in the world. The misconception that shelter pets are somehow second rate is so ridiculous, but it’s a big part of the reason that approximately 4 million healthy, adoptable animals are euthanized in this country each year.

As Animal League America’s spokesperson, I’ve been privileged to meet thousands of Mutt-i-grees, and I’ve also witnessed the looks on the faces of both the animals and their adopters during the magic moment when they choose each other. It’s truly an indescribable feeling—the purest form of joy I’ve ever seen.

People come up to me all the time and tell me happy tales about the animals they’ve adopted at Animal League America or through another shelter or rescue group, and not once did anyone express disappointment about the choice to adopt and save a life rather than buy a pet at a store or on the Internet.

This Valentine’s Day, please join the Mutt-i-grees Movement and become one of the millions of animal lovers who spreads the message that shelter pets make the most loyal and loving companions imaginable.

Also, if you’re ready to adopt and are in the tri-state region, you can take advantage of Animal League America’s Valentine’s Day/President’s Day special, where you’ll get 25% off on the adoption of any Mutt-i-gree one year and older from Feb. 14th through Feb. 18th at our Port Washington, NY adoption headquarters.

I can’t wait to hear all about your new family member! Just post a comment below, or on our Facebook page.

Happy Valentine’s Day!
