Pet Adoptathon 2016 Kick-Off Weekend A Huge Success!
Hundreds of people lined the sidewalks and walkways of North Shore Animal League America’s Port Washington, N.Y. campus last weekend for the kick-off of our 22nd annual world-wide Pet Adoptathon.
But our 36-hour Pet Adoptathon event was just the start of something bigger and even more powerful...
For the entire month of May, the original global pet adoption event, sponsored by Purina, will help unite thousands of homeless pets and happy adopters across the entire country and around the world. More than 2,000 animal welfare organizations are participating in this life-saving effort, as well as more than 30 worldwide, including groups in Japan, Australia, China, and South Africa. Our dedicated shelter and rescue partners are working tirelessly to promote, organize, and support this collective effort, turning their cities, hometowns, and villages into safe havens for our beloved Mutt-i-grees®.
Back at our kickoff event, as the 9am hour approached and 36 consecutive hours of adoptions were about to get underway, you could sense the excitement in the air – hundreds of homeless animals were just minutes away from finding responsible, loving homes, and lucky adopters were about to become official Mutt-i-gree families. What better way to start the weekend than rescuing an adorable dog, cat, puppy, or kitten? Before the doors to our Adoption Center opened, we needed to make it official with the help of Emmy-winning actress, adopter, and Pet Adoptathon Ambassador, Edie Falco to say a few words and cut the opening ribbon. She addressed the crowd, thanking them for the commitment they were about to make.
“You are saving the lives of these animals, but the most surprising thing is wait until you see what happens to your lives. If you don’t know, if you haven’t had an animal before, it shifts the air in your house in a way you cannot imagine…They teach you about love in a way that may be a little more difficult, a little more complicated for humans, but it’s very simple and very clear when you have an animal in your life.”
Joining Edie for the opening ceremonies was Donna Smith Lawrence, founder of Susie's Hope, a nonprofit organization that promotes education and awareness of the care and responsibility required in owning pets as well as animal safety around unfamiliar animals. Animal League America honored her with the Crystal Collar Award for her devotion to animal welfare.
For the next 36-consecutive hours, our Mutt-i-grees were on display for hopeful adopters, excited to add a new four-legged member to the family. By Sunday evening, 577 of our Mutt-i-grees found their perfect matches, and we couldn’t be happier! Not only were the adoptions plentiful at the two-day event, but Adoptathon 2016 offered up fun for the entire family – patrons had the opportunity to watch the Purina Incredible Dog Team, enjoy a visit from Mr. Met and New York Mets legend, Mookie Wilson, plus join the puppy party and more, while they waited to find their new best friend.
Our 36-hour kick-off event launched a month long adoption event around the world. Here are some images from our big weekend, and from a few of our global partner shelters.
