The press conference highlighted the fact that 8-10 million animals enter shelters each year and an estimated 3-4 million animals are destroyed.

J. John Stevenson and Kathryn Erbe asked Americans to adopt a pet from a shelter and let everyone know that wonderful, healthy and happy animals are available at shelters across the US. We call these special shelter pets Mutt-i-grees. The press conference can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IotgIaddRU

The day was also celebrated with the debut of a new Mutt-i-grees Movement PSA with Animal League spokesperson Beth Stern, that ensures that media outlets across the country will continue to support shelter pets by airing this important PSA (click on play arrow on image at right).

Hundreds of Thousands of Animal League Supporters Asked to Support World Rescue Day on Facebook

The Animal League provided supporters with a World Mutt-i-grees Rescue Day badge to post on their social media pages to help raise awareness of World Mutt-i-grees Rescue Day and the plight of shelter pets.  “Our supporters love animals, and we thank them for helping us celebrate the importance of World Mutt-i-grees Rescue Day, by sharing this day with family and friends” said J. John Stevenson.

How You Can Help

Even after World Mutt-i-grees Rescue Day kicked off on August 1st, we’re asking supporters to continue to share our vision of the Mutt-i-grees Movement with family and friends for the entire World Mutt-i-grees Rescue Month of August 2011.  As a group, we can help save so many more lives.  Please continue to support these amazing shelter pets, Mutt-i-grees, on your Facebook, Twitter, and blogs.

The Mutt-i-grees Curriculum is such an important component of the Mutt-i-grees Movement. The Curriculum is a new, innovative program that builds on children’s affinity for animals and highlights the unique characteristics and desirability of Mutt-i-grees®, or shelter dogs. The Curriculum teaches social and emotional skills and is unique in its bridging of humane education and the emerging field of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). The Mutt-i-grees Curriculum was developed by the Animal League, in collaboration with the Yale University School of the 21st Century, and was graciously funded by The Millan Foundation.
