Mutt-i-grees Express: And We’re Off!

North Shore Animal League America is proud to announce another successful year of saving lives through its official launch of the Mutt-i-grees Express. To celebrate that launch, the Animal League is unveiling its new mobile rescue unit, which proudly bears the Mutt-i-grees Express logo.  Mutt-i-grees Express is an expansion of the Animal League’s national humane relocation program and is made possible through both established and emerging collaborations with shelters nationwide, in the Animal League’s ongoing mission to add to the more than one million lives it has saved since 1944.

North Shore Animal League America’s national humane relocation program has employed well-equipped, climate-controlled rescue vans and mobile units to transport pets from overcrowded municipal shelters (where many would be euthanized) to the safety of the Animal League since 1991.  By doing so, countless numbers of animals have been matched with families and individuals in the New York City Tri-State area, where the demand for these loving pets is great.  This humane relocation effort has already been the Animal League’s most far-reaching program to date, responsible for saving hundreds of thousands of dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens since the program’s inception.

The Mutt-i-grees Express program is one of several important manifestations of the Mutt-i-grees Initiative, from which the Mutt-i-grees Movement as a whole has evolved over the years.  The Movement seeks to generate awareness of the plight of shelter animals, elevate their status and reduce animal cruelty through education and innovative programs.  It includes a Curriculum for schools as well as the Mutt-i-grees Registry (where proud adopters can register their pets -- purebreds and mixed breeds alike).  An estimated 8,000,000-10,000,000 dogs, cats, puppies and kittens enter U.S. shelters annually, and tragically, over 4,000,000 of these wonderful animals are destroyed to control pet overpopulation.  Millions of lives are saved when potential pet parents make the choice to adopt a pet from a shelter or rescue group instead of purchasing a pet from a pet store, since any type of healthy and vibrant Mutt-i-gree (dog, cat, puppy or kitten – both purebreds and mixed breeds) can be found at shelters.  Now, thanks to the expanded Mutt-i-grees Express mission, countless numbers of animal passengers are on the fast track to the Animal League’s national headquarters – and from there, a wonderful new life in a loving home.
