PORT WASHINGTON, NY, June 8, 2012 – Students from the Mural Club at Martin Van Buren High School in Queens, NY, created a beautiful mural, entitled "Our Journey Home," as a gift to North Shore Animal League America. The mural will be unveiled at a ceremony with musical accompaniment by the Martin Van Buren High School Drum Line on Monday, June 11th at 11:00 a.m. at NSALA’s Port Washington Campus, 25 Davis Ave.

Each year the Mural Club creates one mural to be displayed in their school and a second mural to be donated to better the community. After a visit to NSALA in February, the students chose their theme for this year’s mural, "Our Journey Home." The mural, which took five months to complete, represents the journey of shelter pets, otherwise known as Mutt-i-grees®, from rescue all the way to their permanent and loving homes. Throughout the creative process, students were able to speak to NSALA staff members about how they felt about the organization and what story they would like to be told through the mural. The final design is an 8’X12’ mural divided into three panels, each representing the mission of the Animal League: rescue, nurture and adopt.

"The students volunteered their time and hearts every day to give back to an organization that has saved over one million pets to date," said Mural Club Advisor Lisa Hitchcock. "They are very proud of their work."

"We are honored that the students chose our organization to dedicate this beautiful mural to," said NSALA’s Senior Vice President of Operations, Joanne Yohannan. "It is very important at a young age that our children get involved in their community, dedicating their time and skills to a worthy cause. They are the voice of our future."

Adopters and visitors can see the display in the Family Waiting Room at North Shore Animal League America’s campus at 25 Davis Avenue, Port Washington, NY. To see all of the beautiful Mutt-i-grees available for adoption, visit
