February 24, 2012 (Port Washington, NY) – North Shore Animal League America is thankful for the quick actions of one of its canine alumna who rescued her family from a dangerous fire in Levittown, NY early this morning.  According to news reports, Lilly helped alert the Argento family, and a friend staying with them, of the fire and they were all able to escape without serious injury.

“We are extremely proud of the life-saving efforts of Lilly, a rescued Mutt-i-gree, whose own life was saved through North Shore Animal League America’s humane relocation program,” said Joanne Yohannan, SVP, Operations, North Shore Animal League America.  “Lilly was a three month old Mutt-i-gree on a list to be euthanized in a municipal shelter in Tennessee when she was rescued by the Animal League last year.  She was adopted by the Argentos and truly adds new meaning to the term “rescue dog” by having saved the lives of her family.”

North Shore Animal League America, the world’s largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization, created the Mutt-i-grees Initiative to give a voice to the millions of shelter pets in the United States.  Mutt-i-grees include all purebred and mixed-breed shelter pets – dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens – and they all share the common need to find permanent and loving homes.  An estimated 8-10 million animals enter shelters each year and most are healthy, affectionate and beautiful.  Sadly, more than half of these animals are euthanized, the victims of overpopulated shelters.  Millions of lives could be saved when potential pet parents make the responsible choice to adopt a pet from a shelter or rescue group.
