Football Star Acts as Role Model to Kids
PORT WASHINGTON, NY, April 19, 2011 – Beginning April 30 and continuing 36-hours straight, North Shore Animal League America – the world’s largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization – will hold its annual lifesaving event, Pet Adoptathon 2011, sponsored by Purina ONE®. The mission of this global event is to promote shelter adoptions, including mixed-breed pets, known as Mutt-i-grees®.
Not only will Animal League adopters have over 700 puppies, kittens, dogs and cats to choose from at its Port Washington adoption headquarters, but the 36-hour marathon event will feature fun for the entire family under the big tent. This includes performances by the Purina Incredible Dog Team, Kid’s Corner, Mutt-i-grees Marketplace, arts and crafts, balloon sculptures, plants for sale and so much more!
As part of the festivities, on Sunday, May 1st, two-time Super Bowl Champion Jarvis Green will participate in a very special event. Beginning at 12:00 noon, Green will lead an hour-long young kids program called Mutt-i-grees ACTIV-ities. The Animal League has created this children’s program in partnership with Yale University School of the 21st Century and the Melody Hounds® Music Classes to promote healthy lifestyles for children.
Mutt-i-grees ACTIV-ities is a series of ACTIV-ities designed to introduce children to exercises that relate to or are inspired by dog behavior and Mutt-i-grees. Exercises were selected with two goals in mind: one, to provide children with opportunities for physical fitness, and two, to engage children in team-building activities, reminding them that they are a part of a larger community. The activities are also a reminder that all dogs need exercise too!
Green was excited to hear about the program, not only because he is an athlete and understands the importance of staying healthy, but because it targets young kids, “My wife and I have three children and we are extremely vigilant when it comes to ensuring that they are leading a well-balanced life, this includes eating healthy food and exercising.” He added, “Teenagers today have lost focus on interacting with other teenagers, because they are so involved in texting and video games. Offering Mutt-i-grees ACTIV-ities is a great example of combining education and fitness, which is especially important to young children, as they are so impressionable.”
Green is extremely committed to community programs and was awarded the New England Patriots Ron Burton Community Service Award in 2006. He also founded the Jarvis Green Foundation in 2007 to provide support to single working mothers in disadvantaged, low-income areas. For information please visit, www.jarvisgreen.com.
