NBC News Anchor Chuck Scarborough’s Dog Oliver Honored for Bravery at North Shore Animal League America’s 9th Annual Lewyt Humane Awards
July 16, 2010, Port Washington, NY – Chuck and Ellen Scarborough’s dog, Oliver, was recently honored with the Scarlett Award for Animal Heroism from North Shore Animal League America. The NBC News Anchor picked up the award for his feisty pet at the 9th Annual Lewyt Humane Awards Luncheon at the Garden City Hotel, hosted by Emmy Award-winning writer/producer and stand-up comedian, Carol Leifer.
The Scarlett Award was established in 2000 to honor the globally recognized young mother cat, Scarlett, who bravely saved the lives of her six kittens from a burning building, returning to the inferno to retrieve them one by one, in spite of her own horrendous pain and injury.
The Animal League bestowed the honor this year to Oliver because he saved the life of the Scarborough’s beloved cat Stanley from the jaws of a coyote. Oliver’s act of courage reflects the same spirit that compelled Scarlett to save her kittens from the fire.
“North Shore Animal League America is one of the great organizations for animal rights, for animal welfare, not just finding homes for pets but also combating animal abuse,” says Scarborough. “I admire the work that they do. They are right on the front lines in helping these wonderful creatures. We adopted Stanley and Oliver 12 years ago, and I can’t tell you how many ways they’ve enriched our lives—they’re just a daily joy.”
The Lewyt Humane Awards Luncheon was attended by over 250 guests and is named in honor of Animal League founders Alex and Elisabeth Lewyt. The event benefits the organization’s mission to rescue, nurture and adopt homeless animals. Over the past decade, the Animal League has rescued an average of 20,000 animals each year.
