Letters from Katrina: The Katrina Lemonade Stand
Thank you so much for the terrific T-shirts and lovely letter that were sent to Lauren O. and Natalie B. The girls are very proud to be wearing the same shirts that Katrina rescuers wear. The shirts that they had been given when we visited NSAL are the dark blue ones that don't mention rescue so they were thrilled to receive the ones you sent.
The whole experience of wanting to help the animals affected by the storm has been a very positive one for the girls. It started with selling lemonade and cookies and witnessing the generosity of neighbors. The next step was going through the process at school to get permission to collect supplies and toys, checking the "Katrina" box every day and seeing the generosity of schoolmates and families.
The trip to NSAL to drop off the money, food, pet toys and huge bags of blankets and towels they had collected was terrific. Lauren and Natalie loved visiting with the animals and seeing that so many of them were in the adoption process. They were happy to see some Katrina animals there. The best part was when we returned to the cat room and the girls recognized several of "their" donated toys and blankets already being enjoyed by the cats and kittens.
In difficult times, children often feel powerless to help. This entire effort has helped Lauren and Natalie feel empowered to make a difference. Thank you for recognizing their contribution, and for the wonderful work that you do. The NSAL Katrina effort is an experience they will never forget.
