Headquarters: On the Road AgainPosted by on September 12, 2008
Well, no sooner did we return with dogs rescued from Hurricane Gustav, and then we’re on the road again.
Our mobile rescue unit is traveling to Texas to answer a call from our shelter partner, the Humane Society SPCA of Bexar County. Four shelters in the area where Ike is expected to make landfall; Houston SPCA, Gulf Coast Humane Society, Corpus Christi Animal Control and Galveston Island Humane Society, brought their animals to San Antonio to get them out of harm’s way.
The storm is incredibly devastating and we anticipate that shelters near the coast may suffer serious damage, giving these animals nowhere else to go. We will stay in the area to help as needed, then take many of these displaced animals back to the Animal League in NY and find them permanent homes.
We have a second rescue vehicle that’s prepared to go, should added rescue efforts be needed.
The Animal League has been so incredibly busy over the past three weeks with puppy mill and Hurricane Gustav rescues. While most of the 120+ puppy mill dogs have been adopted, many animals rescued from Gustav are still in our shelter. Now, because of Ike, we’ll have even more animals to care for in addition to our on-going rescue efforts.
I encourage everyone in the Tri-state area to come into our shelter and adopt your new best friend. It will enrich your life in so many ways and will help us continue to save more animals. If you are unable to adopt a pet yourself, perhaps you know of a family member or friend who can open their heart and home to a wonderful pet.
Please join me in wishing our mobile rescue team another safe journey as they manage another Hurricane rescue mission. Until my next post…
