NEW YORK STATE PUPPY MILL ACTION ALERT

Support Assembly Bill 740-A and Senate Bill 3753-A

These bills will allow municipalities to crack down on puppy mills and pet stores in their localities by passing stronger laws relating to such matters as animal care, sources of the animals they buy and sell, and spay/neuter. Since localities will be responsible for enforcing their own local laws, this legislation will also result in increased oversight of animals in the custody of puppy mills and pet stores.

Many animals sold at pet stores start their lives at puppy mills, large commercial breeding facilities where animals are often warehoused in unsanitary conditions, in cramped cages, deprived of socialization, adequate exercise, and necessary veterinary care. The breeding dogs spend years, if they survive that long, suffering in these deplorable conditions.

ACTION

Contact your own NYS assemblymember and state senator as well as the legislators listed below. Let them know:

• Existing laws do not adequately protect animals in puppy mills.

• Localities should have the right to pass stronger laws so that animals are not forced to spend their lives in cramped cages, deprived of socialization, adequate exercise, and necessary veterinary care.

• 740-A/S. 3753-A will result in more oversight of pet dealers since municipalities will also have the authority to enforce the laws that they pass.

• Animals and consumers will be protected by the passage of this law.
