April 7, 2015: This past Saturday afternoon, as one of North Shore Animal League America’s Mobile Rescue Units turned down Davis Avenue in Port Washington where our headquarters reside, hope sprang eternal.

It was on this day that 82 dogs, puppies and adults alike, would officially get their second chance at life. These dogs were rescued by Animal League America’s Off-Site Rescue Team from multiple Midwestern commercial breeding facilities, better known as Puppy Mills. These facilities are major contributors to the overpopulation problem that many areas in the United States are facing, and result in a lifetime of pain and suffering for the dogs trapped inside tiny, wire cages and forced to breed. Luckily for these pooches, they are safe and sound at the world’s largest NO-KILL rescue and adoption organization, and this Friday, April 10th, many of them will be ready for adoption!

Mill Dogs Become Mutt-i-grees® at Animal League America

“Puppy Mill dogs are some of the most precious and spirited dogs you will ever meet. We would love people to open their hearts and homes to one of these incredible dogs,” said Sylvia Ottaka, Senior Director of Operations at Animal League America.  “They will give you years of love, affection and loyalty.”

The dogs rescued and transported to the friendly confines of Animal League America included a variety of breeds such as Pomeranians, Yorkies, Papillons, Shepherds, Bassett Hounds, Chihuahuas, Cocker Spaniels, Schnauzers, Min Pins, Maltese, Poodles, Bulldogs and Boston terriers, etc. Each of these dogs were carefully unloaded from the Mobile Unit when it arrived in our parking lot by several of our team members and volunteers. While it’s sad to think about the suffering these animals went through before being rescued, it was hard to find an unhappy person as, one by one, they cradled the dogs in their arms and carried them into The Lewyt Ark for their initial examinations.

Irresistable Balthazar and Beautiful Cressida are Just Two of Our Many Shelter Pets Ready to be Loved

Among the four-legged friends on this life-saving transport were several dogs who immediately stole the hearts of the rescue team members and volunteers as they were unloaded off the Mobile Unit on Saturday afternoon. Take the loveable Chihuahua named Balthazar for instance. The tiny tongue of this beautiful tan-coated pooch always seems to be clumsily sticking out of his mouth, making it impossible not to love him. Then there’s the glorious ball of fluff we call Cressida. This gorgeous female Pomeranian survived life in a Puppy Mill, and now it’s time for her to enjoy a life of pampering in her forever home.

At Animal League America, “Rescue, Nurture, Adopt” isn’t just our mission statement, but our promise. Every animal that we rescue truly gets a second chance at life once at our state-of-the-art facility. Balthazar and Cressida are just a few examples of the many unique shelter pets looking for a forever home come Friday. So, if you’re looking to add more love to your life, make your way down to our campus and “Unleash Your Compassion™” by adopting an Animal League America Mutt-i-gree®.
