It’s not uncommon for North Shore Animal League America to save the lives of hundreds of homeless companion animals every week. Making numerous local and out-of-state rescues, even pitching in when animals from other countries need saving, the world’s largest no-kill rescue and adoption organization is always doing whatever it takes to provide animals in need with a second chance.

Over the past six weeks, with the help of our devoted shelter partners, Animal League America ventured out on 66 life-saving rescue missions to places like Tennessee, Virginia, North and South Carolina, and Upstate New York, just to name a few. Our Rescue Team even provided salvation for homeless animals in the Cayman Islands, Turks and Caicos, and St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. In total, Animal League America was able to save the lives of more than 1,100 dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens, a statistic that makes Cindy Szczudlo, Senior Manager of Rescue Services, beam with pride.

“When you’re working to arrange these rescues and actually living it, you don’t realize how many lives you’re saving. It’s not until you take a step back and take the time to reflect and look at the numbers, when it really hits home,” said Cindy. “Saving innocent lives and providing second chances is the reason we’re all here. It’s the driving force behind everything we do here at Animal League America.”

Recently, we teamed up with one of our shelter partners in Clarksville, Tennessee to save an innocent puppy from death’s doorstep. Abandoned and suffering from a painful skin condition and other serious medical issues, 8-month-old Sasha, a Catahoula mix, was hours away from being euthanized when Animal League America and Precious Friends Puppy Rescue and Adoption stepped in to save her life. Sasha’s story is just one example of how your generous support allows Animal League America to continue to embark on life-saving missions wherever they are needed.

“It’s a sad reality, but unfortunately we see it a lot. Innocent animals left suffering and alone with nowhere to turn. You can’t save every animal, but for every one you do save, it’s really special,” said Animal League America National Community Outreach Manager, Christina Lovari, who personally picked up Sasha from the municipal shelter and drove her an hour and a half to the safe confines of our no-kill shelter partner. “Thankfully, more often than not we are able to make a difference in these animals’ lives because of the support we receive from people all over the world.”

Every animal that is rescued and carefully transported back to Animal League America’s Port Washington, N.Y. campus in the comfort of our climate-controlled Mobile Rescue Units is treated to the full array of our three-step rescue, nurture, adopt process – one that has become a staple of the organization. It’s this kind of individualized medical attention, compassionate care, and opportunity to be placed in a responsible, loving home that sets our organization apart. Nearly 18,000 animals each year depend on Animal League America to provide them with a second chance. We, in turn, depend on you, our loyal supporters to continue to allow us to make that a reality.
