North Shore Animal League America rescues innocent animals slated for destruction at California municipal shelters

On Saturday, November 16, North Shore Animal League America welcomed 43 small, mixed-breed puppies and dogs to our headquarters after their long journey from overcrowded shelters in the Los Angeles county area.

The dogs range in age from three months to about five years old, and include mixes of Chihuahuas, Miniature Poodles, Terriers, Miniature Pinschers, Papillons and more. All of the dogs are less than 15 pounds and shall remain so when fully grown, except for one: a Catahoula mix, the youngest of the rescues, who will grow to 50 pounds or more.

As with all of our rescues, the dogs were immediately evaluated medically and behaviorally by our expert staff and, when needed, provided with treatment. The majority are friendly and affectionate, and we anticipate that they will do well in homes with children six and older. In addition, most of them are comfortable around other canines, so they would be a great addition to a household with a resident dog or dogs.

The rescue, done in collaboration with our partners at the Jason Debus Heigl Foundation, was part of our national Humane Relocation Program, in which we transport animals at grave risk of being destroyed at overcrowded municipal shelters to the safety of our no-kill campus in Port Washington, NY.

Through our Humane Relocation Program, countless numbers of animals have been matched with families and individuals in the New York Tri-State area, where the demand for these loving pets is great. This humane relocation effort has been North Shore Animal League America’s most far-reaching program to date, responsible for saving hundreds of thousands of dogs, cats, puppies and kittens since the program’s inception.

Many of the dogs are up for adoption today, Thursday, November 21. Please visit our Port Washington campus to meet all of our adorable, adoptable dogs, cats, puppies and kittens of all ages and sizes.

We count on your support to be able to continue our work to rescue, nurture and adopt nearly 20,000 innocent animals like these wonderful dogs throughout the year. Please donate today!
