UPDATE: August 2012

Smores has been adopted! Smores is a Malti-poo puppy who was diagnosed with a liver shunt and needed an immediate surgery. After receiving the care he needed and being put on a special diet, Smores was finally ready to go home with his new family and is doing very well.

UPDATE: June 2012

Smores had successful surgery and will soon be ready for adoption!

He is on medication currently for his liver condition and he will have to be monitored through regular follow-up visits here at the League. Smores will also be on a special diet for life as well.

Smores's Story

When North Shore Animal League America rescued the 10-week old Malti-poo, it was clear that the tiny puppy was suffering from serious medical issues.

Smores was diagnosed with a disorder of her liver called a Portosystemic Shunt (PSS), which is caused by abnormal blood flow through the liver. The abnormality causes toxin to build up in his tiny body, posing serious risks, including seizures. Due to the liver disorder, he suffers from ataxia, fatigue and hearing problems.

A combination of surgery, medication and diet are needed to ensure that Smores has a full and happy life.
