At North Shore Animal League America, we believe in caring for all animals in need, for however long or short a time that may be. Through the support of our Comfort Pet Hospice Care, a part of our Foster Care Program, we are able to provide animals with terminal illnesses the compassionate care they need to live their final days surrounded by love. For a loveable senior tabby named Cutie, the program has been a blessing.

The special needs animals who come to our campus often have nowhere left to go — and are counting on our no-kill promise to heal their wounds. Animals like Clifford, who was struck by a car and sustained severe injuries which will require life-long care. But Clifford is just one of many we will never give up on. Shelter and rescue dogs deserve birthday celebrations and that was the thinking when North Shore Animal League America declared the first day of August as DOGust 1st, the official birthday of all rescue dogs or as we like to call them, Mutt-i-grees.
We’re getting the party started with adoption specials at our Port Washington, NY Adoption Center, as well as helping to promote select shelter partners who will be hosting their own DOGust 1st adoption events. It’s the perfect time to add a furry family member or celebrate your own best friend!

1999: Mobile Adoption Units Create Limitless Possibilities
After purchasing our first Mobile Adoption Unit the year before, in 1999 we began to pioneer two off-site adoption programs: Mobile Adoption Program (MAP), which transports our pets to high-traffic areas, leading to countless adoptions; and Cooperative Adoption Program (CAP), through which we share our mobile units with small rescue groups and shelter partners, helping even more animals find loving homes. Since then, our fleet has grown to 9 state-of-the-art climate controlled mobile units that not only help with adoptions, but also aids our Rescue Team in transporting homeless animals across the country to the safety of our no-kill campus.
