A Journey from Cruelty to Compassion
Fifty-one dogs and puppies saved from commercial breeding facilities throughout the Midwest arrived at North Shore Animal League America this week, thanks to our partnership with National Mill Dog Rescue. It was a journey from fear and neglect to hope and healing. Many of the rescued dogs spent their past lives confined; never experienced a gentle touch or soft grass beneath their paws. Now they have a second chance for a better future.

Our pets, just like the people in our lives, are unique individuals who deserve to be treated with understanding and respect. I’ve placed many Torties over the years, and while some share certain characteristics, they all made wonderful companions with the right people. All they needed was understanding.

As each survivor was carried off our Mobile Rescue Unit, they experienced the same thing — their first touch of compassion. Having lived their lives under inhumane conditions in a commercial breeding facility, they are unsure of what to expect next. 1978: The Birth of Compassionate Care
In 1978, the North Shore Animal League Clinic was established at our Port Washington, NY adoption center. From its humble beginnings, this small medical center catered mostly to the medical needs of our adopted animals and the pets at our shelter. Today, it has grown into North Shore Animal League America’s Pet Health Centers, which consist of the Alex and Elisabeth Lewyt Veterinary Medical Center, Don and Karen LaRocca Pet Wellness Center, and the Freed Special Recovery Center. Accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), this fully operational animal hospital features state-of-the-art equipment to provide the highest quality care to all animals in need.
