Honoring Our Past
While Looking to the Future
Founders Day was May 1, and we’re celebrating all month by honoring a legacy of compassion, innovation, and lifesaving care. Since 1944, our no-kill mission and forward-thinking programs have changed the face of animal welfare. Initiatives like our Shelter Pet Outreach Team (SPOT), which shares the healing bond of animals with communities in need, reflect the many ways we nurture beyond our walls. Explore our journey—and help shape what comes next.

Something to Bark About
Farewell to Stephen
Colbert & Rescue Dog Rescue
With The Late Show with Stephen Colbert coming to a close this month, we’re reflecting on one of its most joyful legacies: Rescue Dog Rescue. For ten incredible years, this segment brought laughter, heart, and—most importantly—life-changing visibility for rescue animals in need of homes.
A Heart for Seniors and a
Gift That Changed Everything
Some volunteers bring joy to the animals they walk. Others bring comfort, routine and reassurance. But every so often, a volunteer brings something that changes a life forever. For senior dog Bernie, who spent nearly two years in our care waiting for the right family, that Sunshine Maker was Janette.

Get Ready for Spring:
The Power of Prevention
Spring is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy more adventures with your pet. As activity levels rise, so does the importance of prevention. From wellness exams to vaccines and parasite protection, a proactive approach helps keep your furry friend healthy, happy, and ready for the season ahead.
Where Critical Cases
Find Hope
When our shelter partner Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC) reached out about a four-month-old puppy named Opal who had tested positive for parvovirus, we immediately agreed to take her. She was critically ill and required intensive medical care to survive. Then came another call, and now two tiny lives hung in the balance.
