This June, thousands will gather for China’s annual Yulin Lychee and Dog Meat Festival, and innocent dogs and puppies will be stolen from their homes or from the streets and slaughtered. Each year, an estimated 10 to 20 million dogs are killed in China for their meat.

But the tides are changing. In 2020, Shenzhen became the first mainland Chinese city to ban the consumption of dog and cat meat. And South Korea and other countries have introduced similar bans.
