Pet Adoptathon Kick-Off Weekend a Huge Success!
Nearly 600 Orphaned Animals Find Home... Sweet Home.
There was plenty of barking, a lot of purring, and a steady chorus of oohs! and aahs! There were also smiles galore and more than a few tears of joy, as adopters and Mutt-i-grees made the kind of deep connection that permanently changes the lives of humans and shelter pets alike.
In other words, it was a day of small - but mighty - miracles.
Actually, it was much more than a day...36 hours, to be exact...as North Shore Animal League America kicked off its 20th annual worldwide Pet Adoptathon. Held at the League's Port Washington, N.Y., headquarters, the family-friendly festivities began at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 31, and drew to a close the following night at 9 p.m.
Throughout the event, a steady stream of eager adopters filed into the building, forming a line that, at times, reached into the street. For many, the wait seemed short and fun, thanks to a chance to mingle with volunteers, staff, and Marvel Superheroes Spider-Man and Captain America. The crowd also heard heartfelt testimonials from New York Giants offensive guard Geoff Schwartz, television and radio personality Peter Rosenberg, and celebrity groomer Jorge Bendersky, all of whom shared their passion for the League's life-saving mission.
By the end of the weekend, hundreds of families and individuals had opened their hearts and homes to almost 600 dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens, some of them puppy mill rescues. Equally impressive, the same scenario was playing out around the world, thanks to the coordination of our Pet Adoptathon team. Sponsored by Purina, this year's event involves more then 2,000 animal shelters and rescue groups in nine countries, including the U.S., Australia, and China.
And as the saying goes, it ain't over yet. Our global Pet Adoptathon will continue throughout the month of June, offering special activities and adoption opportunities. Last year's international grand total came to 30,000 adoptions, a number we hope to exceed this year.
But no matter how you do the math, we count the kickoff weekend a huge success. Nearly six hundred dogs, cats, puppies, kittens in safe, loving homes. That's the bottom line, and it adds up to wonderful!
They came. They saw. They adopted. And in the process, they fell in love. It was smiles galore as our Pet Adoptathon kick-off weekend got underway. Here are a few scenes from the event as adopters and Mutt-i-grees® made a love connection.
