Pug Pups Ready for Their Loving Homes
Eight young puppies will be available for adoption tomorrow at 10 a.m.
The beautiful Pug puppies pictured here are poised to start new lives with adopters who will treasure them for a lifetime. But they came perilously close to having a very different—and tragic—story.
These sweet babies, who are between eight and nine weeks old, were born here at North Shore Animal League America’s Nursery, where pregnant mothers and their newborns are given tender, loving care until they are ready to go up for adoption. Their mothers were pregnant when we rescued them from a puppy mill in the Midwest that had shuttered its doors.
“If this mill hadn’t closed, the pregnant Pugs would have given birth at the mill, and the babies would have either been sold to puppy stores or kept at the mill to be used as breeders, which is a horrible fate” says Sylvia Ottaka, Senior Director of Operations at Animal League America.
Tragically, mill owners view these innocent dogs as mere commodities, with no regard to their well-being. Breeding dogs spend years on end in tiny cages, given little if any medical care or affection. Their cages are typically stacked one atop another, often with no protection from the outdoor elements. The dogs may literally never put a paw on the ground.
“Many people don’t realize that virtually all of the puppies sold in stores or on the Internet are from these mills,” says Joanne Yohannan, Senior VP of Operations at Animal League America. “When you buy a dog through these sources, you are supporting this inhumane industry. That’s why it’s so important to adopt from a shelter or rescue group and save a life.”
These adorable eight puppies will be available for adoption tomorrow, April 23, beginning at 10 a.m. There are also over 100 puppies of all kinds available for adoption, along with cats, kittens and adult dogs.
Please visit our Adoption Headquarters at 25 Davis Avenue, Port Washington, NY to meet all of our Mutt-i-grees® (any canine or feline who was rescued, whether mixed or purebred).
Once a month, North Shore Animal League America’s Rescue Teams make the journey to rescue dogs from puppy mills, some which have closed their doors and others which are discarding dogs who can no longer breed. We are dedicated to the cause of finding loving homes for these wonderful animals, and also to putting an end to the puppy mill trade.
