Ringing Out the Old, Ringing in the New

Posted by on December 6, 2012

As I look back on the year that’s almost past and look forward to the year to come, I have so much to celebrate, and I’m filled with gratitude.

It’s true, the year has brought its share of sadness. As many of you know, Howard and I lost our beautiful dog Bianca this summer. Everyone who has ever loved and lost a beloved animal knows this heartbreak. But in the midst of our sorrow, we were so touched by the kindness and compassion shown to us. It brought an abundance of love and light into our lives during a very difficult time.

This year also brought sadness to the many victims of natural disasters, which seemed especially devastating in 2012. Many people are still struggling to get their lives back together, and my heart goes out to them.

Still, even in the face of such tragedies, I was inspired to hear of the tremendous generosity that Americans showed to each other, both humans and animals alike.

When Sofia, an eight-year-old girl from Las Vegas, learned of our Emergency Pet Shelter, where we have been caring for hundreds of animals displaced by Hurricane Sandy, she and her friends held a bake sale and donated all the proceeds to support our work.

Animal lovers from Green Yogi studio in California also sent donations, along with lovely handwritten notes, to contribute to Animal League America’s relief efforts. Those are just two examples, and there are so many more.

People like Sofia give me faith that the message of the Mutt-i-grees® Movement—that it’s always the right choice to adopt a shelter animal—is spreading across the country and the globe. Over the years, I’ve been privileged to witness hundreds of adoptions while on the campus of Animal League America or during one of the many offsite adoption events I’ve attended. Each and every time a match is made, the look on the faces of the animals and their new adopters moves me to tears. There is truly nothing like adopting a Mutt-i-gree.

My most recent Animal League America Mutt-i-gree, my sweet cat Charlie Boy, puts a smile on my face each and every day. In the coming year, I wish you and your family the joy that comes from rescuing one of these unique and loving animals.

Happy holidays to all, and thank you so much for your support of the wonderful work done by Animal League America!
