August 28, 2012, Port Washington, NY – North Shore Animal League America – the world’s largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization – deployed three Mobile Rescue Units this week to perform a puppy mill rescue in the Midwest and assist in emergency relief efforts in the Gulf Coast. In total, NSALA has over 550 wonderful animals at its Port Washington facility looking for permanent and loving homes.

“We are asking the public to join in our rescue efforts and open up their hearts and homes by heading down to our Adoption Headquarters in Port Washington to adopt their new best friend today,” said Joanne Yohannan, Senior Vice President, North Shore Animal League America. “The Animal League has rescued nearly 300 animals from across the country that need to find loving homes in addition to the 250 animals we currently have in the shelter. Help us open up space in our facilities for our life-saving efforts and adopt today!”

The Animal League’s Emergency Response Teams were deployed this week to the Mississippi region impacted by Hurricane Isaac to offer assistance by providing replenishment supplies and assistance for displaced animals. Working with the Humane Society of Southern Mississippi, the Animal League will be transporting over 100 animals back to its Port Washington facility to be put up for adoption.

Also this week, the Animal League’s Mobile Rescue Unit, staffed with Emergency Rescue Team members, performed a rescue from commercial breeding operations, also known as puppy mills, in Missouri and Kansas. The unit will be returning to the Port Washington facility with canines ranging in age, size and breed and including: Pomeranians, Havanese, Daschaunds, Welsh Terriers and Poodles.

The Animal League’s Emergency and Disaster Rescue Program safely evacuates animals out of harm’s way. The team is ready at a moment’s notice to help save animals’ lives, whether they are responding to national emergencies or natural disasters.
