How We Help

We are proud to be the world’s largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization.

Our hands–on work in animal rescue, rehabilitation and adoption of companion animals is unmatched—both in the size and scope of what we do. We rescue, rehabilitate and adopt nearly 18,000 dogs, puppies, cats and kittens each year.  To date, we have saved over 1,000,000 lives, and our advocacy and partnerships have helped to save even more lives.

For over 70 years, we have remained true to our mission – To build our hands-on rescue, rehabilitation and adoption efforts to save the lives of as many companion animals as possible and promote education to increase shelter adoptions, reduce animal cruelty and advance the highest standards in animal welfare.

Increase Adoptions

Animal League America is a strong, national advocate for pet adoption.  Through our hands-on work with the animals, our cooperative approach with shelter and rescue partners, and media relationships, we focus national attention on the plight of shelter animals to increase adoptions.

We conduct mobile adoption events to increase visibility and access to amazing shelter pets.  During these events, we loan our fleet of Mobile Rescue & Adoption Units to give other shelter and rescue groups much-needed support so they too can save more lives.

Our roster of celebrity supporters and our media contacts amplify our efforts so that shelter rescue and adoption messages reach across America—and beyond.  Creating a higher level of public awareness of shelter pets nationwide helps all shelter and rescue groups compete more boldly with pet stores to reduce the cycle of animal cruelty.

Education is also a critical part of our goal to elevate the perception of shelter pets, increase shelter adoptions, encourage spay/neuter procedures, and teach the next generation to be more compassionate.

Rescue Efforts

Animal League America's Mobile Rescue & Adoption Teams have saved the lives of hundreds of thousands of animals across the country.  Our extensive rescue efforts pull companion animals, earmarked for death, out of overcrowded shelters, while our emergency response teams stand ready to respond quickly and effectively in the event of natural disasters.

Animal League America is committed to increasing awareness of the inhumane practice of puppy mills, and cares for dogs saved from these massive breeding operations, where profit overrides humanity. Many of the animals imprisoned in puppy mills have never left their cramped cages, have not received important medical care, and have never walked on a leash or been hugged. We give these deserving animals the medical care, love and attention they need for a second chance at a happy life.

Reduce Euthanasia

As a no-kill pioneer, we understand that a rescue is not complete until an animal is placed into a loving home.

The Animal League America provides comprehensive and affordable spay/neuter services in tandem with educational campaigns to reduce the number of unwanted births. Our SpayUSA program, the nation’s largest spay/neuter referral service, provided over 50,000 low- cost spay/neuter referrals within the past 12 months.  Through these comprehensive spay/neuter efforts, millions of unwanted births are avoided, which reduces the further destruction of pets.

Our Mutt-i-grees® Initiative generates awareness of shelter pets and provides important education to encourage shelter adoptions across the U.S.

Animal Cruelty

Reducing animal cruelty is central to our mission.  Our campaigns and programs raise public awareness of shelter animals to increase adoptions—and added adoptions reduce animal cruelty and destruction.  As a trusted resource for national media, we help shed light on inhumane puppy mills, advocating adoption as the responsible alternative to exploitative pet stores and irresponsible breeders.

Our humane education efforts promote kindness, respect, and empathy for all animals.
