Below is a listing of current volunteer opportunities for people living close to North Shore Animal League America. 


Current Volunteer Openings

Offsite/Special Events Volunteer
Play a crucial role in finding homes for animals at mobile adoption events, as well as provide customer service to potential adopters.
Mutt-i-grees Education Program Volunteer
Conduct assembly and classroom programs as well as conduct tours of the shelter and assist with internships for schools from the tri-state area that are implementing the Mutt-i-grees curriculum.
Medical Center Volunteer
Assist veterinarians and technicians by providing comfort, care and feeding to rescued animals that need extra monitoring and maintain cleanliness of medical center cages and exam rooms.
Pet Behavior Training Class Volunteer
Assist pet behavior trainers with a series of Puppy Kindergarten classes or Dog Obedience classes.
Petland Discount Cat Adoption Program Volunteer
Assist program coordinator with placement and care of adult cats in the successful adoption program with selected Petland Discount stores in the five boroughs of New York City.
Puppy/Kitten Volunteer
Help care for and comfort the puppies and kittens in the Adoption Center and behind the scenes. Provide customer service to potential adopters.
Shelter Pet Outreach Team (SPOT) Volunteer
Responsible for interacting with residents in senior and specialized health care facilities bringing shelter puppies to visit and providing the healing benefits of animal companionship and love.
Quality Control Follow-Up Volunteer
Assist with follow-up telephone calls and e-mails to recent adopters to ensure that adopters’ needs are being met and check on the welfare of the NSALA animals.
Quality Control Volunteer
To assist with and complete thorough home visits of all NSALA animals on a given route, ensuring that adopters are in compliance with the terms of NSALA’s adoption contract, and the completion of administrative tasks assigned within the Quality Control Department.
Shelter Medical Volunteer
Assist veterinarians and technicians by providing comfort, care and feeding to rescued animals that need extra monitoring and maintain cleanliness of shelter medical cages and exam rooms.
Dog Walking Volunteer
Dog walker volunteers provide much-needed exercise, attention and socialization for the adult dogs in the adoption center.
Cat Volunteer
Cat volunteers help care for and comfort the cats on the adoption floor, behind the scenes and in the Cat Habitat, as well as provide customer service to potential adopters.
Foster Care Volunteer
Foster Care Parents have the opportunity to care for an animal that’s not yet ready for adoption.
Clerical duties – file and create records. Assist clients that come to Medical Center. Handle telephone calls and data entry
Pet Behavior Volunteer
Assist the trainers with daily duties as assigned, i.e., housebreaking walks, making shreds and preparing Kong’s, distribute bones and toys, feed and medicate, etc. Not an entry-level position.
Humane Education Volunteer
Strong desire to interact with children and adults, plus a strong belief in the power of education. Reliable and dependable; provides own transportation to and from presentations; at least 18 years of age; must be able to responsibly handle animals off-site.
Cat/Puppy/Triple Area Volunteer
Cleaning and handling of cats, kittens and puppies and providing information to potential adopters.
Administrative Assistant (offsite dept)
Take phone calls from offsite staff and complete computer checks as requested.
