Eight Years with North Shore Animal League AmericaPosted by on June 18, 2012
I can’t believe it, but it has been eight years since I became a part of the Animal League America family. They have been eight amazing years filled with happiness - helping to find homes for thousands of Mutt-i-grees®! Watching the organization grow and flourish has been so exciting to me! I am reminded every day when I look at the three cats I adopted from NSALA, that adopting a pet means saving a life. I love my Apple, Walter, & Leon Bear!
Eight years ago I participated in the 2004 Lewyt Humane Award Luncheon and that was the start of this beautiful relationship. I was just reminded of it as I attended the 12th Annual Lewyt Humane Awards Luncheon this past week. My passion for this organization and its cause grows more and more everyday and so does my knowledge of how important it is to rescue and adopt rather than go to a pet store.
Speaking of the Mutt-i-gree way, I was so happy to receive news at the Awards Luncheon that Garfield, the Animal League’s resident 40lb cat, has found a wonderful new dad and will be going home soon! I absolutely fell in love with Garfield when he appeared with me on a few TV appearances. It was very important that Garfield find the right adopter who would help him lose the 20lbs of weight he needs to lose to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I was informed by Sylvia Ottaka, Senior Director of Operations at Animal League America, that Garfield’s new daddy has experience with adult cats. In fact, he even helped his previous cat lose 9lbs! Garfield is on his way to becoming thinner with monitored feedings and lots of needed exercise!
Nothing makes me happier than watching these deserving pets find loving homes. I am so lucky and grateful that my husband, Howard, shares the same passion. Last year Howard photographed me with adoptable animals in the North Shore Animal League America’s 2012 Calendar. It was important to both of us that we highlight the beauty and kindness of these precious pets and help them find loving homes.
A lot has happened over the last eight years. It has been such an eye-opening, humbling, and exciting experience being a part of this family. I can’t wait to see what the next eight years will bring…..maybe another kitty or two!
