Step 1 – Rescue

The thousands of unwanted and abandoned pets that Animal League America saves each year come into our care in a variety of ways. Many are simply left on our doorstep while others are found wandering the streets alone and afraid. Our Cooperative Pet Rescue (CPR) saves numerous pets from states where municipal shelters are overflowing and euthanasia is the remedy for population control. We also rescue pets impacted by natural disasters and other emergencies and are often called on by families that need to re-home purebred dogs they can no longer care for.

Step 2 - Behavioral Assessment/Training

Each animal is given a Behavioral Assessment to determine any existing issues and our professional trainers address any problems before the pet becomes available for adoption.

Step 3 - Medical Evaluation

A full Medical Evaluation is performed on each animal to provide any treatment necessary.

Step 4 – Vaccinations

Each dog, cat, puppy and kitten receives all the necessary vaccinations such as Rabies, Distemper and Feline Leukemia prior to moving to the Adoption Center. Nearly 34,000 animals were vaccinated in 2012.

Step 5 - Spay/Neuter

One way to end the needless deaths of almost 4,000,000 animals a year is to stop overpopulation. Animal League America understands the vital importance of spay/neuter and its impact on the overpopulation problem. In 2012, we performed 8,851 spay/neuter procedures and provided countless low cost spay/neuter referrals.

Step 6 – Grooming

Every animal that comes to us is endearing in its own way. A bath and grooming complete the picture and helps put their best paw forward on the adoption floor.

Step 7 - Adoption Center

Our Adoption Center is open 365 days and houses an average of 350 dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens. Forty-two indoor dog runs surround a bright and spacious atrium where potential adopters can become acquainted with possible new family members.  Contact us for a private tour!

Step 8 - Cooperative Mobile Adoption Program

When potential adopters can’t get to Animal League America, our Mobile Adoption
Units bring dogs, cats, puppies and kittens to them. The Cooperative Mobile Adoption
Program helps save thousands of animals each year and enables us to work in partnership with rescue organizations and shelters to save animals from their shelters, too. Using our
Mobile Adoption Units, we host adoption events at high-traffic locations to raise visibility of our shelter and rescue partners and increase adoptions.

Step 9 - Adoption Screening

Our adoption screening process is designed to ensure that each animal is placed with a responsible person prepared to make a life-long commitment. An important part of the process is to match the lifestyle and needs of the adopter with the individual dog or cat. To ensure successful, caring adoptions, an application must be completed and references provided. Each application is then carefully screened by our Adoption Counselors. Since 1944, over 1,000,000 pet owners have met our high standards and adopted a pet from Animal League America!

Step 10 - Adopted into a loving, new home!

Nothing is more exciting than the moment an animal leaves Animal League America to begin its new life with a loving family. Our work isn’t over though. Post-adoption, quality control follow-ups ensure that pets are in caring homes. It is important to remember that responsible pet owners should not allow their pet(s) to roam unsupervised.

Special Recovery Center

UPDATE: As seen in Pawprints - Issue 3, 2012

Most of the pets we rescue, nurture and adopt at North Shore Animal League America have been freed from horrific puppy mills and high-kill municipal shelters, where they’ve typically received little if any medical attention. When they arrive at our doors, often with compromised immune systems, they’re vulnerable to a wide range of illnesses, from simple kennel cough to life-threatening Parvovirus.

We’re proud to have set the industry standard for combating Parvovirus, saving a previously unheard 80% of animals who have been infected. But we can do even more to prevent disease and nurture ill animals back to health.

Our solution: a state-of-the-art Special Recovery Center that will allow us to effectively isolate animals with contagious diseases from the general patient population.

“Not only will the Center enable us to care for ailing animals in the most effective and compassionate manner, it will also help us prevent healthy animals from contracting illnesses,” says J. John Stevenson, Animal League America’s President. “Plus, the money we save will go right back to our core mission to rescue, nurture and adopt.”

As a loyal donor to Animal League America, your support of the Center is essential to its completion. We’ve already begun to raise the $750,000 it will take to turn this life-saving facility into a reality, but we need your help.

Wonderful Naming Opportunities are also available starting at $10,000, so please contact our offices at 516-883-7900 and speak with Jill Burkhardt or email jillb@AnimalLeague.org if you would like to discuss how you can make a life-saving contribution to the Special Recovery Center* and have a section of the new facility dedicated in honor of a beloved pet or person.

*All donations made on behalf of the Special Recovery Center must be clearly marked as such in order to be held in a restricted fund and not used for general operating expenses.
