They searched for survivors. They comforted first responders. They walked into places no one should have had to enter. And they never stopped looking.
On September 11, 2001, more than 300 extraordinary dogs joined the rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero and the Pentagon. They were search-and-rescue dogs, police K-9s, guide dogs and therapy dogs. They searched through the rubble, brought comfort to those who needed it, and stood beside the people working through unimaginable loss.
But today, we remember all those whose lives were lost on September 11, 2001 – the thousands of innocent people who never made it home, and the firefighters, police officers, first responders and others who gave their lives trying to save others.
We remember the courage, the sacrifice, the lives forever changed – and the extraordinary four-legged heroes who stood alongside humanity in one of our nation’s darkest hours.
