North Shore Animal League America is currently seeking an experienced Compliance Manager to join our team for a full-time position. The Compliance Manager is responsible for ensuring NSALA’s shelter operations comply with all applicable animal welfare laws, regulations, licensing requirements, and operational standards. This role serves as the organization’s compliance lead, partnering with multiple departments to promote animal welfare, safety, accountability, and continuous improvement. The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented compliance professional with strong operational and relationship-management skills who can balance regulatory oversight with hands-on support in a fast-paced animal welfare environment. They are highly organized, proactive, data-driven, and committed to maintaining the highest standards of care for animals.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The position of the Compliance Manager includes but is not limited to:

  • Manage regulatory compliance, licensing, permits, and Department of Agriculture and Markets requirements.
  • Maintain annual renewal of all licenses and applications for licenses.
  • Oversee compliance training for employees and volunteers, including administration of the Litmos Learning Management System.
    • Ensure all staff and volunteers are receiving proper training required to remain in compliance with all laws within the first 60 days of hiring, and ensure training is being maintained for all staff and volunteers annually.
  • Maintain and update all training guidelines and ensure that all training manuals are kept up to date in accordance with all laws and regulations.
    • Maintain files for all staff members to ensure that proper documentation of all training is being logged and secured appropriately.
  • Develop, update, and maintain shelter policies, procedures, and operational protocols.
  • Conduct compliance audits, facility inspections, and document findings.
  • Monitor animal welfare standards, including housing, enrichment, exercise, feeding, weight tracking, and length-of-stay management.
  • Collaborate with Medical, Behavioral, Rescue, Admittance, Facilities, and HR teams to ensure compliance across operations.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of written protocols pertaining to Animal Handling, Behavioral Assessments, Enrichment, Management of Bite and Scratch Cases, etc.
    • Said protocols must be reviewed and updated annually, as well as made readily available to all staff and volunteers.
  • Must work in an interdepartmental capacity and act as a liaison between departments to ensure that NSALA remains in compliance with all laws and regulations.
  • Conduct and record routine daily and weekly assessments to ensure that all areas are remaining in compliance with all safety regulations, including, but not limited to, noise regulations, proper access to Personal Protective Equipment, etc.
  • Ensure all laws and regulations regarding the welfare of the animals in our care are being met daily.
    • This includes but is not limited to, feeding/appetite monitoring, weight monitoring, proper exposure to daylight, ability to free roam, ensuring all animals are placed in suitably sized enclosures, and monitoring length of stay of all animals.
  • Ensure all that all areas are always kept clean and orderly and that proper cleaning and disinfection equipment is properly always stocked and readily available in all areas, and that appropriate Personal Protective Equipment is being used by staff and volunteers.
  • Ensure that a clear written management structure that defines staff authority and reporting structure is made readily available to all staff and volunteers through Human Resources.
  • Support shelter operations during weekends, holidays, special events, and foster home compliance visits as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of 3 years of management experience in compliance or a related field/capacity.
  • Must possess strong project management skills.
  • Must possess a high level of organizational and analytical skills.
  • Must be well-versed in the management of data and the creation and maintenance of spreadsheets and reports.
  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be well-versed in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Must be able to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and ability to travel locally.
  • Must be friendly, outgoing, and a team player.
  • Must be able to multi-task in a high pace work environment.
  • Must be dependable and punctual.
  • Must love animals.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in animal sheltering, rescue organizations, nonprofit operations, or regulatory compliance.
  • Knowledge of animal welfare laws and industry best practices.
  • Passion for animal welfare and the mission of NSALA.
  • Collaborative, team-oriented approach.

Salary: $66,300 per year
