Dobby Was Hours from Euthanasia — You Can Help Him Heal
When our shelter partner Animal Care Centers of New York City reached out about a young dog who had been hit by a car, time was running out. In addition to abrasions, he had suffered multiple fractures to his pelvis and appeared to have other internal injuries. The severity of his condition meant that he was hours from euthanasia if no one stepped up to save him. Despite his agony, this sweet pup still tried to roll over for belly rubs. His spirit refused to give up and we refused to abandon him.
When Dobby arrived at our Pet Health Centers, Dr. Mark Verdino, Chief of Veterinary Staff, worked quickly to assess his condition. “His bladder looked abnormal on imaging, and I was concerned it may have been pierced by the pelvic fracture,” said Dr. Verdino. During emergency surgery, the full extent of his injuries came to light. “Not what I was expecting,” he said afterward. “The bladder was intact, but one of his kidneys had been torn away from the ureter. We couldn’t repair it, so we had to remove the damaged kidney. Fortunately, his other kidney appears to be healthy, and he should be able to live a normal life with just one.”
Dr. Verdino added that Dobby’s tragic accident underscores a vital message. “The vast majority of dogs hit by cars are actually unneutered males,” he explained. “They escape in search of females in heat and wind up in dangerous situations. It’s one more reason why it’s so important to spay and neuter your pets.”
Now recovering under careful observation, Dobby remains in a fragile state. He has an abdominal drain and urinary catheter in place while our medical team monitors him for bleeding, further urine leakage or infection. The coming days will determine his future and your compassion can make all the difference.
