Through our North Country Initiative (NCI) our mission to RESCUE NURTURE ADOPT EDUCATE is being accomplished through the operation of a no-kill rescue and adoption center and the implementation of a series of programs to assist with the needs of homeless felines and feral cat colonies in the region. These programs include a focus on spay and neuter to reduce cat overpopulation and the suffering that coincides.
We are currently seeking a Veterinary Assistant who will assist with the day-to-day operations of the Adoption Center, working directly with LVT, on-site and off-site Veterinarians, and other staff to ensure the health and well-being of all animals under our care and to assist finding them responsible, loving homes.
Responsibilities:
- Understand and follow policies and protocols.
- Perform daily rounds, medical and behavioral assessments.
- Develop medical and behavior plans for each feline in our care.
- Regularly communicate and work with the ADK team to assess and maintain the feline population within our capacity for care.
- Administer needed vaccines, oral, topical, eye and ear medications and other treatments and special diet feedings approved by DVM.
- Perform feline intake procedures.
- Identify and address health concerns.
- Prepare both in-house and outside lab testing.
- Schedule and coordinate pre-adoption veterinary exams and other veterinary care for those animals in need of medical attention. Transport if needed.
- Coordinate in-house appointments and assist DVM on scheduled visit days. Ensure veterinary exams, diagnoses, and treatment plans are recorded and communicated.
- Coordinate the flow of felines from holding to “ready for adoption” status.
- Ensure habitat clipboards are accurate and up to date.
- Input and maintain accurate and current animal health records in Impromed software.
- Coordinate clinic visits and necessary medical care for animals in foster care. Bring urgent matters to the attention of DVM, LVT and/or management.
- Regularly communicate with and provide guidance to fosters regarding medical care, behavior status, scheduled appointments, intake plan and other needs.
- Document and track future vaccines and treatments due for all animals in our care.
- Maintain proper inventory of medical/intake supplies.
- Collaborate with team to facilitate monthly transport to completion.
- Submit daily medical update email.
- Discuss medical needs for in house cats with potential and approved adopters.
- Monitor and maintain post adoption S/N program.
- Cross train in adoptions to assist potential adopters with the adoption process; processing adoption applications and finalizing adoptions using proper procedures.
- Assist with daily animal care when needed and various other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Previous animal-related work experience, with shelter experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of animal welfare: including care, handling, health, behavior and sheltering issues.
- Ability to organize, execute, and report on work activities without direct supervision.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail with the ability to multi-task.
- Must be administratively detailed, proficient in MS Office.
- Ability to work in a fast paced and demanding work environment.
- The ability to work a flexible schedule including some nights (up to 8:30pm) and one weekend day.
- Ability to work in a team-oriented environment.
- Maintaining confidentiality to sensitive client information.
- Desire to make a positive difference in the lives of animals.
Salary: $17.50 – 18.50 per hour
