North Shore Animal League America, the world’s largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption center, seeks a recent graduate of an accredited veterinary college with a passion for shelter medicine, to join the Anita and Catherine Petring Program.

This program provides DVM graduates with a one year hands-on learning experience at AAHA accredited Alex and Elizabeth Lewyt Veterinary Medical Center. We provide high quality, affordable veterinary care to our shelter residents as well as both adopted and community pets in our fully equipped, state of the art facilities. In house capabilities include wellness center with rehabilitation suite (including underwater treadmill), dental suite, digital full body and dental radiology ( supported with cutting-edge artificial intelligence by SignalPet), endoscopy, class IV therapy laser, 3 GE Versa Active ultrasound machines, fully equipped surgical suite performing both soft-tissue and orthopedic surgery, and isolation facility.

The Petring Grant Veterinarian Internship is a 1 year, intensive and immersive position for new veterinary graduates looking for a highly mentored position to develop clinical confidence and decision making skills. It is a rotational internship through the following functional areas:

  • Shelter Medical
  • Isolation/Quarantine
  • Hospital wards
  • Clinic Services
  • Surgery

A special research project may also be part of the program. The perfect candidate must meet the following requirements:

  • A New York State DVM license required
  • Candidates must be a recent Veterinary Medicine graduate (within one year of graduation)
  • Must be able to commit to a full-time 40 hour work week, which includes 1 weekend shift per weekend for one year

The position pays a stipend of $85,000 annually, before taxes.  This is considered a contract position and as such, employee benefits are not provided. Two weeks (80 hours) of scheduled vacation and limited sick time are permitted.

While there is no guarantee of employment at the end of the program, successful candidates would be given priority for open positions.
