Tantor Was Almost Out of Time — Now He’s Fighting to Heal

From the moment he first arrived at North Shore Animal League America, Tantor greeted us with a trusting and gentle demeanor, while his skin told a heartbreaking story. Picked up off the streets by our shelter partner Georgia Transport Allies, he had no fur, inflamed skin and a significant leg injury.

In Georgia, Tantor quickly became a staff favorite for his sweet temperament, but as an older dog with so many medical needs, he found himself on a list for euthanasia if no one stepped in. Thankfully, our Mobile Rescue Unit was already in the area, and we were able to make space to save Tantor.

Once safely in our hands at the Pet Health Centers, Tantor was a perfect patient, his paws neatly crossed during his examination as if to say, “I’m ready.” Now he begins his long journey to healing. Animal League America Senior Veterinarian Dr. Gerard Laheney explained, “Tantor is suffering from Demodex, a skin disease caused by a parasitic mite that lives in the hair follicles of dogs. It usually affects puppies, so in older dogs that can signal underlying immune issues. His skin is thickened and dry, so we can tell this has been going on for a long time.”

Tantor has also been diagnosed with bacterial and yeast infections, which have been contributing to his itchy and uncomfortable condition. He will be starting a comprehensive treatment plan, including medicated baths, antibiotics, antifungal medication, supplements and immune support. We’re also performing bloodwork to rule out any underlying metabolic disease. While some areas of hair loss may be permanent, we’re hopeful that with time, the inflammation and itchiness will subside and Tantor will feel like himself again.

This kind of long-term, individualized care is only possible because of generous supporters like you. Your Help Me Heal gift today will ensure Tantor continues receiving the treatment, nurturing and security he’s gone without for far too long.

Please give today, and help Tantor heal with dignity, comfort and love.
