After enduring a traumatic leg injury and long recovery, this sweet and spunky kitten is off to start a beautiful life with a family who already adores her. Thanks to the expert, round-the-clock medical care she received – including weeks of bandage changes and gentle physical therapy – Cream Soda regained the use of her leg and her playful, kitten energy. Now’s she’s beginning a joyful new chapter that her rescuers, her caregivers and all our supporters made possible.

Cream Soda had a rough start when he first arrived at our Pet Health Centers, but through the support of our Help Me Heal Program, Cream Soda was able to get the urgent care he needed to heal from his wounds and get back on his paws. This amazing feline recently graduated from his foster home where he was working on strengthening his leg and improving his overall mobility. Though he was only in his foster home a short time, he made quite the impression. His foster mom says he has tons of personality and describes him as curious, playful and super loving.

Today Cream Soda is back on campus and making new friends in our Bianca’s Furry Friends Feline Adoption Center. Happy and healthy, this terrific Tabby is ready to find his fur-ever home. If you’re interested in meeting Cream Soda and maybe bringing this sweet boy into your home, visit us today in Port Washington, NY.

Cream Soda’s recovery has been nothing short of remarkable. Thanks to the expert care he received at our Pet Health Centers, this affectionate kitten has turned a major corner. “We’re about six weeks out from when he first arrived with that extensive wound,” said Chief of Veterinary Staff Dr. Mark Verdino. “It’s been a long road. Cream Soda needed surgery, but we couldn’t close the injury fully, so we had to manage it as an open wound.” After dozens of meticulous bandage changes, pain management and continuous monitoring, Cream Soda’s injury slowly began to heal.

Today, he’s bandage-free and full of personality, playfully nibbling at Dr. Verdino’s beard during his exam. He’s regained motor function in his leg, and while there’s still some nerve recovery underway, he’s begun physical therapy to build strength and coordination. “He’s placing the leg and bearing weight, which is a great sign,” Dr. Verdino added. “We’re optimistic he’ll make a full enough recovery to live a normal life.” Cream Soda will be ready for adoption soon, bringing his incredible journey, made possible by compassionate supporters like you, to a happy new chapter.

Help Cream Soda Heal From a Devastating Injury

Warning: Some images may be graphic and heartbreaking.

When this helpless kitten was picked up as a stray on the streets of Queens, NY, he was in critical condition. Though only months old, Cream Soda had already endured unimaginable suffering.

The skin along his upper front limb had been ripped away — a brutal injury known as a degloving wound. By the time he reached North Shore Animal League America, most of the tissue along his leg was already gone.

“We’re not sure what caused the injury,” said Dr. Mark Verdino, Chief of Veterinary Staff, “but the danger with this type of wound is that it can damage the brachial plexus, which is the bundle of nerves that controls the forelimb. If those nerves are severely compromised, it could mean permanent paralysis.”

Before scrolling through these images below, please note that some are very graphic. But this is the work that we do and it’s important.

Cream Soda is facing a wait-and-see battle. During his last bandage change, Dr. Verdino noticed small signs of hope. Cream Soda tried to pull his leg back slightly, suggesting that some nerve function remains. “It’s a very good sign that he has sensation in his foot. If there’s usable function, we’ll fight to save the leg,” he explained.

But complications loom. Cream Soda spiked a fever, likely from inflammation or infection at the wound site. He’s being treated with antibiotics and pain medication, but his condition remains fragile. Each bandage change is critical. If the nerves turn out to be permanently damaged, amputation will be his only option. Fortunately, cats adapt remarkably well to losing a front limb, but we are doing everything possible to save his leg and give him the full life he deserves.

Through it all, Cream Soda remains sweet, playful and trusting. He does not appear to a feral kitten; possessing an affectionate and gentle nature that suggests he once had a home before he was abandoned to fend for himself.

Cream Soda’s battle is far from over. A gift to our Help Me Heal program will help us give Cream Soda the specialized wound care, ongoing evaluations and critical medical support he needs to fight for his future. Please donate today and help Cream Soda heal and thrive.
