Help Rosie’s Healing Begin
This endearing pup was found wandering the streets of Texas by our partners at Longview Animal Care and Adoption Center, and was in desperate need of treatment. One look at Rosie’s swollen paws, and raw, patchy and painfully inflamed skin and you can only imagine her discomfort. Through it all, however, she wags her tail, leans into affection and trusts.

Overcrowded shelters often don’t have the ability to give cases like Rosie’s the attention and time her condition requires, so thankfully Rosie was transported to North Shore Animal League America so she could receive the help she needs.
Rosie is suffering from generalized demodectic mange, also known as Demodex, a condition caused by skin mites that, left untreated, leads to massive hair loss, secondary infections, and systemic inflammation. In Rosie’s case, the Demodex had likely gone unchecked for months.
“By the time she got to us, her skin was severely infected, and her feet were painfully swollen,” explained Animal League America Senior Veterinarian Dr. Gerard Laheney. “It’s clear this has been left to progress for a long time.” Rosie now will undergo an intensive 8-12 week recovery that includes medicated baths multiple times a week, systemic antibiotics, antifungal medications, anti-inflammatories, and nutritional support. Her damaged skin may never fully regrow its fur, but she is finally on the path to healing.
Despite her discomfort, Rosie’s gentle nature shines. “She is the sweetest little nugget,” said Karla Scaramuzzo, Animal League America’s Senior Rescue Manager, who helped coordinate her transport. “I am so excited to watch her glow up.” With the support of our Help Me Heal Program, Rosie will benefit from expert medical care and the kindness of people who refused to give up on her. Rosie is safe and one step closer to the happy, healthy life she deserves.
