Suzy Survived a Hurricane and Now She Needs Your Help
When Hurricane Helene devastated the South, we stepped in to help rescue animals in its aftermath. Among them was Suzy, a sweet 10-year-old Chihuahua with soulful eyes and a gentle heart. Despite her small size, Suzy has shown remarkable resilience, but now she faces a serious medical challenge. Will you help Suzy get the care she desperately needs to survive?
During Suzy’s initial examination at our Pet Health Centers, it was discovered that she has mammary tumors on both sides of her mammary chains, a condition often caused by being unspayed. According to Animal League America Staff Veterinarian Dr. Katarina Valen, “Mammary tumors are hormone-driven, so the fact that Suzy wasn’t spayed predisposed her to them. About 50% of these tumors are cancerous, and the only way to know is to remove them and submit them for biopsy.”
The surgery to remove the tumors must be done in two stages, and Suzy recently underwent her first procedure, which included being spayed and having a radical mastectomy on her left side. “Fortunately, the biopsies from her left side came back benign, which is fantastic,” Dr. Valen said. “We’re hopeful for the right side, but we won’t know until we take them out.”
Currently, Suzy is healing in her foster home and getting ready to have the remaining tumors removed. While her prognosis is promising, she faces a long road to recovery. Mammary tumors can spread to other parts of the body if left untreated, so her care is critical.
Suzy has already endured so much. With your help, she can get the care she needs and the quality of life she deserves. Thank you for standing by her side.
